Having gotten into sabr lately, I've been thinking about stats all the time. I was thinking about basketball's fg% statistic, and I think there could be a better one. They have adjusted fg% which is (PTS-FM)/FGA/2, but I think that free throws should be counted in, since it does end a trip down the court just like a shot does. If only they kept a stat of how many trips to the line after a player has that are not after a made shot. This would mean if a person gets fouled going for a shot but misses it, the ensuing two free throws would count as 1 FTT(Free Throw Trip). A free throw after a made shot would not count as a FTT because a FGA was already charged to the player. Then, a better adjusted fg% would be PTS/(FG + FTT). I think that would be a better measure of how effective a player someone is, or maybe I just need to sleep.
