Hammy probs o' plenty around the majors. Barry Bonds sat out a cold
game at Wrigley and had what our source called a "high voltage"
session of electrical stimulation on his partially torn hamstring.
It looks as if Bonds will have to take a rest at some point. Pokey
Reese's hammy is not healing quickly and he was placed on the DL. He
is not expected to be out past the standard 15 days. Mike Piazza's
strained hammy is not a bad injury, but there's no reason for the
Mets to push him at this point and he'll be given a couple days off
just to be sure.
As we move down to knees, Bobby Higginson will miss a couple games
with a bruised patella. He could play if needed, but Luis Pujols is
expecting him to sit a couple games. J.D. Drew sat out tonight with
his sore knee but could have played if the Cards weren't facing a
tough lefty in Al Leiter. Ken Griffey's knee led to discussion of
him moving to a corner OF slot upon his return, but he felt that he
was better off staying in center. Some reports indicate he could be
back as soon as next Monday, but we're sticking with May 1.
Jim Edmonds problem isnt the knee, but he's denying reports that
its 'roids either. Tony Larussa proved he does have a law degree but
not a medical degree by giving the biggest load of BS I've heard
this year, non-Kremchek category. Edmonds played, but our reports
indicate that he probably just didn't want to sit on the bench.
Rey Ordonez will miss a couple games and help the Mets. He has ...
you guessed it ... a strained oblique.
After reports that Jay Powell was making progress, the move from the
15 to 60 day DL surprised us. We double checked with our source and
they indicate its a roster move more than an indication of the
injury's severity. The same source indicated that team doctors are
looking at the medical records of an NL reliever in anticipation of
a trade.
Garry Sheffield had a second cortisone injection in his injured
wrist since the first one did nothing. He's out until at least
Thursday - more likely Friday - and if he cannot go at that point,
the DL is likely. Garry's own comments have been very pessimistic,
so if you have him on your roster, start looking at your plan B.
Roberto Hernandez is nearing readiness for a rehab assignment, but
is apparently balking at a trip to Omaha or Wichita. Erubiel Durazo
will head to Tuscon once the D-Backs return to Arizona this week.
Mark Mulder is still feeling "tension" in his forearm and will miss
another start. Mike Fyhrie will get another start, but we're not
much more worried about Mulder's long term prospects.
As we said over on NetShrine earlier today, Joe Mays elbow is
looking problematic. Dr. Koco Eaton, the team ortho, explained to
the media that Mays' problem is degenerative, but not arthritic.
Mays will likely be out into June and perhaps longer. There's some
serious concern that this could be the end of the effectiveness of
Mays and the Twins will seriously look at their young pitchers
(Lohse, Kinney) in the next few weeks. With contraction looming over
their head, they may be likely to pull the trigger early on some
deals.
Next report tomorrow evening. Be sure to check us out on Netshrine
or Yahoo Messenger.
