View Full Version : Questions About a Few Obscure Titles I am Seeking
I am interested in trying to get a few obscure books on the mionr leagues that aren't readily available on a wide basis. Does anyone know...
1. If David Chrisman (author of books on the International, Piedmont and Virginia Leagues) is in SABR or contactable in some other way?
2. Anyone who actually owns a copy of either of Richard Beverage's books on the old PCL (Hollywood Stars and Los Angeles Angels). I have wanted them for some time but only see a couple for sale at $100+ which means "not today" for me.
3. Anyone else with an interest in old books here, besides me?

Yes. I want to buy that SABR book on the Federal League.

Does SABR have a book lending option? Not sure? If yes, the $50 could be worth it - to join - if it helps you get the books you want to read.

A few things you may or may not have tried:
A search at amazon.com. If it's available generally, it's probably there.
ebay. You have to check periodically, but most everything in the world (including controversial used chewing gum) turns up there eventually.
Ask your librarian about an inter-library loan. If a library somewhere has it, a good I-LL person can find it and borrow it for you.

SABR does have a lending library, although I haven't delved into it enough to know what's available, and how readily you can get it.
As for the interlibrary loan option, I've found that there are a few libraries that own the item - 10 for the Virginia League, 20 for Piedmont, and a lousy 4 own the IL one. Like Sweaver suggested, a good ILL person could get them if you wanted to borrow them.
The Beverage book is actually easier to find, at least in libraries, than the Chrisman books. For example, I know that Cincinnati P.L. carries both of those titles.
Has anyone seen the Chrisman books? If so, are they narrative or primarily collections of statistics?

SABR's "lending library" is neither lending, nor a traditional library.
It's a collection of articles that you can get copies of, at a cost of a few cents per page in copying costs.
It's non lending and non library-like in that you don't have to return what you receive.
SABR does have a collection of publications on microfilm which you can borrow and then return. I don't know the specifics, but believe that just about all of the publications are from the 19th century, with maybe some from the very early part of the 20th.
