View Full Version : Seattle Wins Big but May Lose Big Too...

Seattle swept Anaheim 4 games, but Edgar Martinez pulled up lame running out a grounder in the ninth....they are doing an MRI to determine if he will need to go on the DL, but it doesn't sound good -- he needed to be helped off the field...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=220411103

The most surprising part of this article to me though was this:

It was a miserable series on the bases for Martinez, who was thrown out trying to steal third Monday night -- then was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Darin Erstad in the sixth inning Thursday as he tried to score behind Carlos Guillen's tiebreaking single.

Does Edgar all of a sudden think he's Ichiro or something? I wonder how many outs there were when he got caught trying to steal third...I also wonder if the third base coach sent him last night...

Back to his injury though, sounded like Boone started backpedaling a bit after saying what having Edgar out would do to their lineup, especially mentally...I think he's right....will be interesting to see if he does go out, how long and what kind of effect it has...

He basically played on one leg last year, and it was sad to watch it.

I know he takes a lot of supplements - - maybe, and I say maybe, he's using creatine - which leads to a lot of hamstring pulls - - if yes, he should stop. It's not helping him.

I'm sure LGO will have the scoop on this for us.

It looked like he just pulled up lame. Strained hamstring, 15 days on the DL and stretch like crazy the rest of the year.

Edgar is one of the most respected hitters in the game. Let's his bat do his talking.

It's nice that he's a great hitter and "respected". That doesn't make him a good baserunner, and it doesn't mean he's not hurting his team with his poor baserunning.

Down with the DH!

I absolutely agree KC -- he's burned the Yankees too many times to count so I don't take anything away from him...he was also my DH in the All NDF contest....but he does need to be careful on the basepaths, that's all I meant...

I don't think he has any illusions, but he usually knows when to pick his spots....over the past 3 seasons, he's 14-for-17 on the basepaths (well, 14-18 now)...

He also K'd more than I've seen him do in a series. He was K'd by the rookie who was cut for "The Rookie",Brendan Donnely.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Edgar fade a bit. He's getting up there in age.

I actually wasn't listening to the game at the time...I had turned off after about the 6th inning since it was "in the books" by then and had turned on my MP3 collection already (you hear that RIAA! I have MP3's! Arrest me, why don'tcha? :etongue: ), so this was as much news to me as it was to y'all.
I did listen when he tried to steal 3B the other day and I thought two things: "Is this 1992?" and "Is he getting a little anxious to pass Junior on the Mariners' runs list?"
What softens the blow for the Mariners is that they signed Ruben Sierra, and now can get him and McLemore into the lineup regularly. The Mariners always have that benefit of that good 4th OF, and this is where it shows. Should High Sierra turn back the clock to 1989 again, the Mariners shouldn't miss a beat. It'll suck that Edgar will miss time, but he isn't getting younger, so maybe we'll get used to this. But this will show the depth of the Mariners again. I personally wish that Juan Thomas was brought up from the minors to replace him instead of Ron Wright, I own his rights in a DMB league, but oh well.
BTW, the DH still does not suck. :) But let's not get into an anti-DH thread, because I'm tired of them. :p

Not a Mariner fan at all, but I'm stationed here in Seattle. I watched Edgar run to first the night before and cause a throwing error from some unexpected burst of speed.

But I heard...

that he ruptured a hamstring and will be done for the season after his surgery tomorrow.

Like I'm going to trust a Yankee fan...:seamhead:

"He ruptured a small hamstring tendon that attaches in the back of his knee and will have it removed (Saturday) by Dr. John Conway, the Texas Rangers' orthopedic surgeon," head trainer Rick Griffin said.

Martinez was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the series opener against the Rangers, but surely will be sidelined for much longer than two weeks.

"I think we will wait until after the surgery to see what he (Dr. Conway) estimates," Griffin said. "It will be longer than 15 days."

Griffin said this is a similar injury to the one Martinez suffered in 1993. That one cost him most of the season.

This is straight from MLB.com. You have to wonder what the recovery time is for a guy at 39 years old compared to a guy at 30. The local radio sports channel is where I heard his season was over.

Yeah, you're right about not trusting a Yankee fan, but as a fantasy baseball player, I have to respect Edgar's bat! he's been a Yankee killer at times.

At his age, based on Y.F's post, this culd be the end of a career. :(

too bad...terrific hitter...if his career ends now,or he comes back a mere shell, does this kill his HOF chances,i wonder?Did he need the one or two more big seasons to get over the Hump?

Edgar is a longshot for the Hall, where his stats are now. He would have a long wait, as he probably would in any case, largely because of his DH role. In 20 years, we may look at that differently, but he is not a first-ballot guy.

Pat Gillick really did a good job over the winter it seems.
Signing Ruben Sierra was genius.
Last night against the Rangers..........Grand Slam.
That should put some salve on the wound.

Sierra still may be a fool's paradise....he could have a massive cold streak.

However, if this is it for Edgar, he joins Dewey Evans, Dale Murphy and Andre Dawson on the outside looking in.
