Dodgers recall 44-year-old Orosco
.c The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jesse Orosco, who has pitched in more games than anyone in major league history, was called up Friday.
Orosco had been at Triple-A Las Vegas, where he was 1-0 and did not allow an earned run in 10 appearances spanning seven innings. The 44-year-old left-hander has appeared in a major league record 1,096 games.
"The reports I had been hearing from our Triple-A club was the fact that he's even a little bit better than he was in spring training,'' manager Jim Tracy said before Friday night's game against the Houston Astros.

I wish I were left-handed.

Belanger and Stargell have passed away - albeit at early ages due to illness. Nonetheless, most of these guys are in their 50's now.

I agree, jpalexa, it breaks my heart that my two sons both throw R.
I'll say this about Orosco - he must be doing something right about conditioning or studying opposing batters or something. I'm pretty sure he's the only major leaguer older than I am. He owes his longevity to something in addition to throwing with his south paw.

Eventually, he may be the answer to the trivia question - Which pitcher appeared in 11 hundred games and faced, on average, less than 5 batters per game?
Amazing stat - - from 1991 through 2000 (10 years!) Jesse had less IP than Appearances in every season.
In 1999, he appeared in 65 games and had 32 IP. He faced 144 batters - - about 2 per game. Easy work.
Cooperstown bound? :confuse2:

Cooperstown bound? :confuse2: On longevity alone? Not sure, but the two rings will help.

If Jim Kaat is out, no way Orosco goes in.

You're kidding, right? Kaat is not the relevant comparison; Gossage is. Or any other top-flight reliever (other than Fingers, who got in because of the 3 championships and the mustache).

Orosco is not a top flight RP - - - he was for maybe 3 years. Basically, he's hung on by just getting lefties out in a situation.
The Kaat point was - - here's a guy with 280+ wins and more Gold Gloves than the almost anyone - and he can't get in because most think he hung around too long just getting lefties out.
At least Kaat had something before he became a situational guy - - Jesse has nothing compared to Kitty. Hence, the comment, if Kaat is out, how do you let in Orosco?
