View Full Version : Baseball Fouled Out?

First, I am NOT a hoops fan - - never have been. March Madness is just an annoying thing that I have to tolerate until Opening Day.
I mean tolerate in the sense that it causes SportsCenter (and my Spring Training clips) to be on late - - like last night, when there was "only" 3 minutes left in the hoops game at 10:57 PM - - and, with all the friggin' timeouts, etc., SC didn't come on until around 11:20 PM.
But, while I was "watching" the end of the basketball game, more like "waiting" for SC, I had an idea. What if they had foul outs in baseball?
Say, as a batter, once you struckout three times in a game, you had to be taken out of the game? Or, as a pitcher, once you issued 5 walks, you had to be taken out of the game? Or, as a fielder, once you made 2 errors, you had to be replaced? Or, as a runner, once you ran into 2 outs in a game, you had to hit the pines?
Now, I am NOT suggesting this - - JUST wondering. Would something like this have a positive or negative impact on the quality of the game? Would we see better baseball - or players playing scared? Would there be more strategy by MGRs? Stuff like that.

I don't like the idea. A foul in basketball is an action against another player. What you mention is more like a turnover in basketball than a foul and in basketball a player is not taken out of the game by the rules for traveling five times in a game.

Trying to start the XMLB?
Let's put pads on them and let the offensive team have a man in the field blocking the fielders.
I'm with Buzz.
:etongue: And Steve - your anti March Madness stance costs you "the Man" status garnered by your tribble reference of a few weeks ago. :)

People cry about how many moves LaRussa makes now...i can't imagine game times if there were that many lineup changes.

I can see Albert Belle coming out of retirement for this one.

Feeling a little on the whimsical side, Steve? Too much time on your hands or something?

Most of what I do is a result of my boredom.

I can't agree with such a rule change.
Sports change rules to keep the sport intact. An example of this is football narrowing the hash marks and limiting bump-and-run so we can see a little offense. Basketball widens the lane and sets foul limits to stop goon tactics and overdominance by guys who are tall, but stink.
Part of baseball's allure is that is is not a "time" sport; it's home-field advantage is REAL (the advantage of batting last). Baseball is also not a free-substitution sport. The proposed change is typical of timed sports or free-substitution sports.
There are rule changes that would be helpful. I would love to see trips to the mound, throwing to first, and pitching substitutions cut down. These are what slows down the game. But to be out of the game if you whiff so many times; baseball is a sport where you fail most of the time, and are a star if you succeed 10 out of 30 times.

It sounds kind of fun, but I agree with Buzz. Remember, players can get kicked out for other reasons.

Don't watch the NBA....go watch a D-3 college game, or a lot of the smaller conferences. Great hoops, and it's basketball. The Illinois Chicago - Loyola game today was quite compelling.
