Looks like Reed is just another ML asshole. His attitude is not only "trade me", but if you don't do it quick I will destroy my trade value by announcing to the world I won't play here under any circumstances.
Word to the Twinkies. Steinbrenner may not know much but he knows how to deal with this crap. When Munson pulled this same scam GS said "you can play for me or no one". Ole Thurm' came to his senses shortly thereafter.

Not sure I remember this one - - can you share more?

This was either when GS signed Reggie or the year after. Munson wanted to be traded to Cleveland (near his home)and was jerking the Yanks around. GS just told him he was a Yankee or nothing.

Not sure that's true - - the part about the stay or nothing part. I was glued to the comings and goings back then - I think I would have remembered that.
ChrisCary, Lee - other Yankee fans - recall this at all?

I seem to remember something to that effect. Of course, the situations are different. With Reed being traded in the middle of a long-term deal, he has a right to demand a trade, as per the CBA.

I have Devine's biography on Munson, which is researched like a text book, I've yet to read it - but, will look for the claimed Stein action and report back.

Page 173 addresses Munson's desire to play in Cleveland - - nothing notes the claimed Stein reaction - - Gabe Paul is quoted as saying "I understand his desire to be near his home. But we would not entertain any thought of trading Thurman Munson unless the Yankees could benefit from such a transaction. It would be pretty hard to do that."
Further the books says there was a rumor of trading Munson to the Pirates for Dave Parker - which Stein "took a look at" but Martin told Stein "there's no way we can part with Munson."
The book then follows with Munson reporting to Spring Training, having decided to "charge forward as a Yankee" and in S.T., he and George came to an agreement on "an exceptional contract."
"The pact ensured that he would be a Yankee player through 1981 unless any unforseen occurrence - trade or otherwise - took place." <----Jeez, Devine made sure he got the "otherwise" in there.
Needless to say, had there been an edict of "here or no where" from Stein, I think a book of this detail would have reported it, no?

I remember being worried for a brief period that we would lose Munson, but I don't remember any ugliness like the Reed deal.
