Who holds the season and career records for most 9 pitch / 3 strikeout innings?

Disclaimer: I remember reading this around 1992 and am unsure of the source. I doubt there has been any change though.

Lefty Grove did it twice in 1928
Ryan, Koufax and Grove all 2x in a career

I thought that Grove did it 3 times.

Grove did it only twice, not three times...

so who did it thrice?

The only indication that the answer should be 3 is from Gummo, who thought Grove did it. Since BB straightened him out, it is likely that nobody did it 3 times.

IIRC, this is one of the rare feats in baseball, far less common than the cycle or a no hitter. I'm sure someone here will have stats on how many times it has occurred.

Koufax, Ryan, and Grove all did it twice--no one thrice. I believe it's happened 36 times, 25 in the NL and 11 in the AL.

The definitive word! Thanks, Tre.
