The Sporting News is reporting that Rickey Henderson is drawing interest from the Red Sox (their backup OFs right now are Damon Buford and Michael Coleman). If this was to materialize, it would give BOS some nice options in OF/leadoff, with their usual lineup of Ramirez/Damon/Nixon and possible combos like Rickey/Nixon/Ramirez.

Sounds like a love connection to me.

I still wish someone would give Rickey more than a 4th/5th OF role right now. His OBP could still leadoff for more than half of the teams...I'd much rather have him than Gerald Williams

I don't think you can ask Rickey to play more than 125 games in a season at his age.

Considering we have Rondell White and his 95 gms/yr (over the past 2 yrs), I think that Rickey's 123 gms/yr (over the past 2 yrs) doesn't look so bad. It's just a matter of hoping that Rickey can play while Rondell is injured. I wouldn't be too happy with VanderWal and Spencer at the corners.
All this is pointless, tho, since Rickey won't return to the Bronx this yr. But I can only hope...

Ricky should just retire and go into the HoF with the second greatest class in history.

Why? Simply to go in with that class?
If he has the desire and the ability to keep on playing, I think he should play. And he seems to have both.

I know this is off the wall, but, if Rickey plays this year - - - once he plays his 47th game, he would have set the record for most games in a season played by a 43 yr. old black man. File that away for a future trivia question.

Did you actually look up the list of most games played by a 43-yr old black man? And I thought I was a stat freak ;)

Rickey knows what Rickey wants, and I'm quite sure Rickey will play until they have to use the jaws of life to tear away Rickey's jersey.
Besides, Rickey's got one mini-milestone left to accomplish and that's 300 HR's. Rickey doesn't hit homers like Rickey used to, but Rickey would certainly have a shot at 300 this year.
Besides, Rickey just loves the game, and as long as Rickey can steal bases and drawn walks from Rickey's crouch stance, Rickey will play. I can't picture Rickey as a Red Sock, but I can picture Rickey playing SOMEWHERE in 2002.
Wow, Rickey-speak is difficult. :p

There obviously is, because the Yanks employ Gerald and no one employs Rickey.

I have no respect for Williams. He is a punk! I am excited about Rickey. I hope Dandy Dan can pull this off. It will add needed depth to the line up!
New mission......Get Rickey!!!

Gerald Williams may have little offensive baseball talent - but, according to many, he is a very well respected and liked man. Hardly a punk. Now, the person that Rickey would replace on the Sox roster, Michael Coleman, well, Momma always said, if you don't have anything nice to say............so, I'll stop there.
You shouldn't hate Gerald Williams because he had the courage to call Pedro what he is - a guy you throws at hitters intentionally. (As the stats back up - http://www.netshrine.com/brushback.html )

I'm pretty sure Gerald Williams spends a lot of time and money helping out poor families and stuff - supposedly one of the classiest guys in the sport.
Back to Rickey - think he would make a good part-time player/coach who could teach a young team's guys plate discipline?

Supposedly, Rickey did a lot of mentoring to Cedeno when they were on the Mets - - in terms of how to steal bases.

Did you know that, in the long storied history of the Red Sox, only 11 men have had 30+ SB in a season?
Since 1934, they've only had three men do it. Rickey should join that group.

Net we have had this discussion before. Let's just agree to disagree. You see Gerald one way and I see him another way.
I have nothing to say about Coleman. We have had that act before......show him the door.:D

This is probably off topic, but upon what do you base your assessment of Gerald Williams? I am truly just curious -- especially given all of the other-side-of-the-fence "facts" concerning Williams.
I don't know enough about the guy (punk-wise or not) either way -- even though he spent time here in Atlanta. I don't recall him being much on the radar screen -- for good or for bad.
