I never liked Jeff Weaver - - this only adds to it.

From ESPN.com:

Jeff Weaver publicly clashed with his teammates and manager Phil Garner several times last year, often chastising the team for a lack of run support. He said if the minicamp was any indication, the team will be happier this season.

"It's just the fact that some of those players that might have been dragging us down are gone," Weaver said.

Detroit allowed the Boston Red Sox to claim All-Star first baseman Tony Clark off waivers and let go shortstop Deivi Cruz and outfielder Roger Cedeno. Outfielder Juan Encarnacion was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for first baseman Dmitri Young.

After the brawl last year between the Royals and Tigers in which Mike Sweeney just beat the hell out of Weaver it was reported that a number of Weaver's teammates were glad it happened.

Apparently he is very self centered and doesn't much care about the feelings or sensibilities of others.

On the otherhand the Tigers just gave him $22M.

Like him or not, he was right. Clark, Cruz, Cedeno and Encarnacion were less than stellar....

If Weaver wants to be a team leader, he has to learn that he cannot lay blame.

I don't think he wants to be team leader.

Never heard anything negative about Tony Clark, Cruz, or Encarnacion, but Cedeno has a bad rap sheet.

Cruz, Clark and Encarnacion just stunk last year. That was it. And Encarnacion may never make it.

Oh, I totally understand that - I got the impression that Weaver was talking more about bad personalities than performances. Could've misread it though.

Weaver may need to choose his words more carefully, since player may wonder who's next to get criticized. He may also speak to the person themselves w/positive thoughts and recommendations, rather than using the media to pass judgment.

That's the way I see it.
There were other guys that sucked with the Tigers last year, play-wise, and are still there, and who were left out of the finger pointing by Weaver.

I think criticizing a player publicly is unprofessional. If you are unhappy than take care of it in private.

Presuming this isn't too :topic:, what didn't you like about Jeff Weaver before? Were there similar media outbursts criticizing teammates and/or management which made you bristle?

Just that he's always quick to lay blame and find excuses. As Dallas Green once said to Stanley Jefferson, "Look in the mirror big boy."

When a team wins, criticizing other players rarely happens, but when it does, it's called motivation.

When a team loses, criticizing other players is called backstabbing.

It's really the same thing, but attaching a different label to it makes it look different.

I think the big problem with those guys and Weaver is their personalities are totally opposite. Clark, Cruz and Encarncion are very laid back and Weaver is very intense.

I personally like Weaver but I could see how he could rub people the wrong way.
