Lee has pointed out the Little Looey couldn't hit a lick. If he got to first he was an outstanding basestealer. He was an outstanding SS as evidenced by his 9 GG's. Somehow he managed a WARP3 of 102 (obviously BP believes his defensive value was very high). Normally I like the way BP factors in defensive value and other things, but I just can't go with it here.

cmon lee

it's not like guys hit offn a tee. gloves and baserunning are very important and you think they are worth exactly zero.

luis was a great fielding SS at a time when SS were expected to field and steal bases and not expected to hit over their weight.

just because someone was not expected to do something doesn't mean we should excuse them for it
Babe Ruth wasn't expected to hit over 700 homeruns
Ty Cobb wasn't expected to get over 4000 hits
David Wells wasn't expected to weigh 500 pounds

Aparicio was important to the Venezuelan and really Latin American movement in baseball and he was a great fielder
I'd even venture to give him as many as 200 RSAA for his fielding
with his -180 RCAA, that makes him about average, and I'm not going to vote an average guy in

i agree with you here. i was just trying to say that i think we should consider everything a player does, not just his hitting.

and i agree with you that the great fielding does just about balance out the poor hitting.

but i DO think that there are some guys in the HOF who are really there because of their fielding, mostly, like mazerowski and ozzie. and i think they should be here too.

but i do agree that lil looie wasn't quiiite as good as brooks robinson, ozzie and maz. so i agree with you on the no for that, but the introduction of latin/venezuelan players should count for something and so i'm saying yes, overall.

barely.
