Here's an easy one for the guys with Lee's software, but try to give everyone a chance.

Who has the most hits in a season without hitting at least .300 that year? How many?

First guess - Maury Wills. Seems I read something about this recently.

If not Maury, how about Kirby Puckett. I think he had several years of high hit totals with sub .300 averages. Just dont know if they were high enough.

I feel like it's Willie Wilson or Juan Samuel...the former is my guess.

Skip's first guess is correct. In 1962 Maury had 208 H's in 695 AB's for a .299 average.

How many other players can you name that had 200+ hits and hit less that .300? I know of 6 others, but there may be more. None of the other guesses did it.

Here are two, Buckner & JoJo White

Buckner had 201 H and hit .299 in '85

I wasn't familiar with Jo-Jo so I looked him up. b-r.com has his highest hit total as 124 in '43 :confuse:

That Jo-Jo was Moore not White

A better Jo Jo. Moore had 201 H, .295 in '35

Can you find 4 more?

There are still 2 guys that haven't been mentioned who had 200 hits and batted <.300 in that season.

Hint: both did it in the '70's

How about Pete Rose and Felipe Alou?

Good guesses, but it's not Pete or Felipe.
