Short brief prime

223 RCAA in 5 years from 1952-56
-18 RCAA the rest of his career

Unenthusiastic yes

The guy posted an OPS+ of 123 is really good, but a WARP3 of 58 tells us he was a distinct defensive liability. A regretful "No".

high end of my grey area
normally, a 5-year prime mixed with 10 years of slightly below average play would make me lean towards no
but the fact that his 5-year prime was as good as it was (6th best over that time, even better than Willie Mays) pushes him back into the yes category

I think the fact that he has a cool name keeps his name in the discussion of all time great first basemen. The Rainman movie helps too, and the image of his arms busting out of his uniform. Good Peak Value Choice to be sure, but stands behind Hodges in his own time.
