Anyone read Neyer's ESPN.com column today on "The Tri-City Excelsiors" - - just me, or, were all the names changed because Disney owns both the Halos and ESPN? Think Rob will get a slap for this?

I don't think so. ESPN takes a lot of "digs" at Team Disney, especially the Mighty Ducks.

That was funny. I don't think Rob will be slapped. First, I would be surprised if his work isn't at least looked at by an editor before posting. Second, the only reason he changed the names was so that he could make it funny, more of a light-hearted rant than a serious one. It allowed him to use those over-the-top comments like "When we pushed back the fences last year, we figured it would help our pitchers, but unfortunately our stats guy -- who's no longer with the club, by the way -- forgot to mention that our hitters might have some trouble with the new distances. Plus, for some reason the new layout made our guys dizzy." (Besides, isn't that a dig against the Orioles, not the Angels?) Anyhow, the column would have been a bit boring if he hadn't jazzed it up this way.

Neyer got in trouble last year, can't remember what the issue was, but, he said something about someone - - - I think it was an issue with Elias? (Anyone remember?)
Anyway, it got him a weeks suspension, if I remember right. So, ESPN.com does think about those things.

Yeah, I think it had to do with the accounting of someone's walks (Babe?) and thus the 'correct' record
I wasn't aware of this. Can someone elaborate?

Just noticed that Neyer's column has reverted back to the one from Monday and the one with the uniforms is gone off the site - - - very interesting. Maybe I called it?

It was late in the season, something to do with Elias - - they made a call on a stat or something that was questionable - - and, Neyer wrote about it and called them out.
The head of Elias called ESPN.com about it - because they have a relationship - and then Neyer was "put on vacation" for the remainder of the year (until the post season) or something like that. I'll look to see if I can find anything more on it.

I remember he wrote about it. Don't remember if it was in a column or in his personal site though.

I'm not going to write an entire column about today's Oakland-Texas trade, because I'm sure it will discussed again in the Athletics Hot Stove Heater, due in just a few days at this fine web site. But summing up the deal in six words ...

TRI-CITY, N.J. -- The Tri-City Excelsiors may be coming off yet another last-place season in the Continental League, but Excelsiors Vice President of Baseball/Public Operations/Relations Dubb Elspeeck thinks he's found a cure for what ails his team............

I knew Neyer was "suspended" for a week last year, but didn't know why. He didn't even put it on his own website, that I saw. May have been part of the deal.
Really missed the column, even sent in an e-mail about it, got a cheerfully noncommittal reply from ESPN.com, about Rob being "on vacation." Yeah, right, during the postseason.
