How's this for great baseball analysis:
"If Jordan can stay healthy, he'll put up almost the same numbers as Sheffield."
"If the Red Sox don't sign Pokey Reese they are crazy! Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman said that Pokey was the best infielder -- not just second baseman -- that he's seen in all his years as a Reds broadcaster."
"Had it not been for my A-Ball manager Jay Ward in 1985, switching me from a starter to reliever, I probably would have never made it to the major leagues. It takes the insight of these great baseball minds to develop raw talent into major league skill." (ed. note: or was it his lack of another pitch?)
"If Kevin can not fight himself as often on the mound (as he's been doing the last couple years) and believe in what he's got left in his arm (which is still above average), then I have to believe Leo Mazzone can get 15-18 wins out of him."
"What do the Rockies need to do? I'm no friggin genius but how about if they start with a dome stadium?"
"they did gain Jeff Cirillo at third base, who's one of the best hitters in the majors"
"Anaheim will still be Anaheim -- ugh!"
Or, if you're dying to read everything that emanates from the assortment of neurons in his head: http://dynamic.espn.go.com/espn/chat/chatESPN?event_id=1137

"To me, Mattingly definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame"
"Gary Carter once again, proves that people who never played the game should NOT have a vote."
"John Burkett, Dustin Hermonson and Darren Oliver will either all have ERA's over 4.00 - 5.00 and give up 30-40 HRs a piece. Unless Pedro Martinez and manager/pitching guru Joe Kerrigan can transform one or all of these average pitchers into Yankee-level pitchers."

Darren Oliver's ERA is 6+ and was brought over since Duke had to accept someone in order to unload Carl. I don't think he was expecting Randy or Maddux in return.
BTW, how does an ace transform a dead horse into a thoroughbred? Isn't that the pitching coach's job? Since Kerrigan is no longer the pitching coach, I figured he'd lean more heavily on that person to do this, not the ace or himself as manager.
As to Yankee-level pitching, I think highly of the current rotation, but other than Roger Clemens career-wise, wouldn't exactly rate the others on par with Randy or Maddux.
Too much of that paragraph said this guy's got a very green thumb and the harvest is looking mighty ripe about now.

I had the pleasure to be present for this chat today (testing my pain threshold). Notice that he only takes questions from people who are absolutely as clueless as he is. No response to the inevitable dozens of "how on earth can Brian Jordan put up Sheffield-like numbers when he's never put up numbers HALF that good and now has to do it in Dodger stadium" questions...

I remember years ago I was listening to Chris Rizzo on WFAN after a fan took him to task about his lack of knowledge in a given area (probably baseball) and Rizzo went off on a rant. He said in plain English that his job wasn't to be knowledgeable on sports but to get ratings.
Dibble is one of those announcers from the Brent Musberger school - don't let ignorance stop you from talking.

Hello GYB! No problem - try it again.

Peter, the reason no one is talking about the strike zone is since last year when the umpires became a unified effort with crews doing games in both leagues throughout the year, and pitching starting to get a bit of it's edge back, is probably why you haven't heard a lot about it.
Huh? Is that a sentence?
I can't see how you can say that Nen had a bad year with 45 saves last year. He saved 50 percent of the Giants wins so if he's going to save 50 percent of their wins again this year than I would probably guess that the Giants will win over 100 and go to the playoffs. But starters like Russ Ortiz, Jason Schmidt, Kirk Rueter and Livan Hernandez all have to pitch up to their capabilities to give Nen a chance to be the savior.
Nen - the savior of the Giants
Aron, I totally think Barry Bonds can put up 55-65 homeruns this year. Barry is his own worst enemy having walked close to 200 times last year. Just think if he struck out 100 of those 200 walks. He could have hit 20 more homeruns.
There is so much hype and so many youngsters coming to the league because we're kind of at a retirement stage in the major leagues. Players like Mark McGwire, Paul O'Neil, Bobby Bonilla are just some of the many great players that have retired in the last few years. Now that there are 30 teams with rosters of 25, there are not that many superstar players on the bench waiting to get their chance.

(Ruben Rivera) is good enough to be the fourth outfielder on the Yankees so he's good enough to start on a lot of other teams. It's not like he's a crack head or a loser like some other guys who've gotten multiple chances.
Q: Big game who do you pick, Clemens or Maddux.
Rob Dibble: Are you serious? I'm Clemens all the way. If Maddux is stinking up the joint, he's not going to brawl. If Clemens is getting waxed someone is going get smoked.
Q:Which city do you think would enjoy a championship more Boston or Chicago?
Rob Dibble: I think Boston and Chicago like being losers. They like to play the victim and do it so well. Lets wait at least another 50 years before we let either of them win. It's kind of fun to watch them suffer.

If the Oakland offense can average about five runs a game, they'll win 100 of them and make the playoffs.
Uh.....then they get 810 runs (74 less than last yr). But then I checked the numbers and last year they missed their pythagorean projection by 6 wins. So he might have a point, provided they allow only 645 runs again, their pyth record would be 99-63
Right now I don't think the Rangers have enough pitching to win the AL West or the wild card. But if they do pick up Bruce Chen, they'll be right on the cusp.
Now that sounds more like him...

One of my favorite and most embarrassing minor league stories -- since there is so much time to kill in the bullpen before we would actually play, pitchers always looked for ways to kill time. We used to carry our warmup baseballs in a long white sock. Since we were in Nashville playing for the Sounds, being the cowboy New Englander that I am, I thought I would spin the balls around my head like a rodeo star. As the balls approached top speed, I hit myself in the head. Rendering me unconscious. It wasn't pretty.

Firing Phil Garner was the only thing they could do. Randy Smith has had his hands tied for years with his owners lack of spending so they both got the axe. It's still hard to motivate a team that two of their five starters should not even be in the major leagues. One of which, Lima, has allowed 83 HRs in the last two years. The Tigers offense is average at best with a couple of really good players. But seriously, how can you keep believing a .500 team can beat the Indians or White Sox?
I can find 6 errors in this. Can you spot them?

- "There are at least 10 teams that are really underachieving so far." (and how many overachieving?)
- "But as for the Cubs, don't you think it's time for a manager change? Or should the Cubs stop trying to field a team with retreads? They've got problems on the mound, can't keep Alou healthy, they need a good hitting catcher." (Smed, you can have this one)
- "Derek Lowe is close but he's been in the bullpen his entire career until this year" (nope, never started in SEA or anything)
- "Last year, Jason only hit 6 HRs in April. He ended up with 38 HRs on the season." (right, because 38 HR doesn't average out to about 6 a month)

Also, the Pirates should not be counted out. They've stayed right near the top despite being the worst hitting team and scoring the least amount of runs in the league.
the Cubs are 11 games under .500 right now. They're also the second to last hitting team in the NL -- hitting collectively .230. You can't win if you don't score. I don't care how many Kerry Wood's and Mark Prior's you have on your pitching staff.
Maybe they got Dibs to voice over that two-headed announcer guy in the Pod Race during Star Wars Episode I.

In the "can I contradict myself in the next sentence" category:
"Stats can't be used to measure the effect of a base stealer because he changes the defense and the pitching patterns. A great base stealer should steal 80 percent or more, I think. Seventy percent is a good number, but that's not how you measure his effect. You measure the intangibles of what he brings to an offense."
In the "I don't know my facts" category:
Asked for his thoughts on Mark Prior, who has never had arm problems at any level - "I haven't seen him pitch, but he reminds me of when Kerry Wood came in. It looks like he can be dominant, but we have to wait and see. I think he has had arm problems, and I don't know how many innings he can pitch this year. But he looks like Wood when I first saw him."
In the "I'm not Bill James" category:
"If you understand stats, then they can tell a lot. Not all are meaningful, though. You have to understand them. When I look at stats of a team, there are a lot I can see in the stats that are meaningful. By the same token, a lot of stuff is rhetoric."

You know the most disruptive base stealer/runner I ever saw was Jackie Robinson and he never stole more than 37 in a single season and his second highest total was 29. Watching those old clips of him are magical.
I don't know how to tell Joe but if it's intangible you can't measure it.
