They're not that good.

When you successfully defend your title of best team in baseball, that's pretty good.

Have you seen any analysis correlating, say, overall W-L and last-month-of-the-season W-L to postseason success?

Hardball Times just had an article about that the other day.

Thanks. For the benefit of those who don't converse in differential equations, here is the article:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/ten-things-about-momentum-in-the-postseason/

What it says is that teams with a hot hand going into September do not have any particular advantage over teams that don't, all things being equal. In other words, if the Cardinals play the Padres, the Cardinals are likely going to win due to their vastly superior W-L regardless of momentum heading into the playoffs. Doesn't always work that way, but for every 2003 Marlins (September W-L 130 points higher than overall) winning the WS, there are plenty of other examples where the late-season hot hand gets slapped by the full-season hot hand, so to speak.
