Barry's latest mini-meltdown shows a man who is tired of all the negative press he is garnering and is further worn down by a series of injuries at a time when he should be the most celebrated man in American sports.

Bonds' problem is the widespread belief that he is a major steroids user as evidenced by his incredible age 36-39 performance with the bat. He is not a particularly nice person and has terrrible relations with the media and not much better relations with fans.

If true, doesn't he have no one to blame but himself?

Why have all these sports sites started putting their articles on multiple web pages? It's not like text is taxing on a browser? Is it to get more ads in? Nah, that couldn't be the answer.

Someone just sent me this link with pictures of Bonds year by year. The jump from 1998 to 2000 is pretty big. Even 1999 to 2000.

Bonds' little tirade yesterday was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. All of this attention being paid to him rises from his use of steroids, a decision made by him, not by Schulman or any of his other enemies in the press

Yeah, the media are to blame.

OIC, so this is being portrayed as a nervous breakdown, eh?

Bonds problem is that he isn't a media darling. And, I'm starting to come to the realization that maybe Lee & Co. were right; the media does tell people what they should think, instead of reporting on what the public is interested in

The man has hit ever since he was at AZ state. He is without a doubt the greatest player of our generation. I was happy to watch him play in Pittsburgh, I was happy to watch him play in SF, I was happy to see him put up the offensive numbers he has put up.

Is he on the juice? Maybe, maybe not. I really don't care, just like I really didn't care that a bunch of MLB'ers were coked-up or greenied-up or whatever.

The gloating I am seeing because of Bonds' ill health sickens me. Disgusts me.

Open question: Are people gloating over his ill health or the fact that he might not be the HR king now?

I'm not gloating about his ill health, but I find it absolutely ridiculous to blame those health problems on the media. He's hardly the first athlete to face the harsh glare of the media and fans, and to blame them is, IMO, a copout.

And to ask the press to make sure they included his son in the shots - to show how they've hurt his family - seems incredibly disingenuous. First, if your family was so affected by this, does it help them to then drag them in front of cameras? And secondly, I think Barry himself has done more damage to his family if any of what Kim Bell says is true.

I suspect it's the former. That he may not be the HR king is a bonus.

FWIW, if there's any gloating by me, it would be the latter. Whether it happened naturally, by force, or an act of God makes no difference to me.

The gloating comment wasn't specific towards you.

I didn't think Bonds is blaming the media for his health toubles, I got the impression that since he's been catching heat since he was playing in Pittsburgh, he's just about had enough. I've said elsewhere that he should pull an Eddie Murray, or even a Albert Belle and tell the press to do the anatomocally impossible, but that's just me.

As for Miss Bell, and the damage she may or may not have caused. There's a pretty good chance that Mrs. Bonds knows or knew about what went on. It isn't a secret that ballplayers mess around while on the road. And even so, that's a private matter that should be handled within the Bonds household

I really think that would be a better move than what he's doing now. I think it's better to just shut them off than to lead them on. It might not help his popularity any, but it might give him a respite.

He's not blaming the media for his injuries, he just has them and they affect his frame of mind. Hard to conquer the world and destroy all enemies with a swing when you need a crutch to stand up!

He's blaming the media, and particularly the Chronicle, for the grand jury leaks. The latest, Kim Bell's testimony, took them only 2 or 3 days to publish. The grand jury leaks are felonies, the Chronicle writers are accomplices, and both are acting with impunity.

this part

If I want to live until I'm 80 years old, I'm going to have to become a leaner-type, cardio-type individual who keeps his heart rate up. I'm not going to fight that losing battle against my weight when I'm retired and my metabolism slows down.

My family cares about me being healthy. They want me to be healthy when I'm 50, 70 years old. They want me to think about the long term. They make a valid point. I'm going to be 41 this year. They ask me: "Are you going to keep beating yourself up?"

Eh?

Have you seen recent photos of Bo Jackson?

Anyway, it makes sense after a couple of knee surgeries to keep weight down, no?

I did see Bo on a BEHIND THE GLORY thing or whatever they call it.
Made me feel better on how I'm been aging!

But, Bonds has gained his weight, albeit muscle, now - not after retirement. And, his gain was intentional.

But the older you get, the harder it is to lose, no? Then combining that with knee problems, he may as well work on losing that weight now, because it'll probably get worse before it gets better. He's 40, not 20

We should all look like Bonds does now when we're 40. But, for some reason, we don't.

I prefer Rickey Henderson...

Anyway, if you're willing to put the time in at the gym, you can look like Bonds. I remember reading somewhere that he learned his program from Jerry Rice. IIRC, it was a pretty intense workout program

A Home Run Workout Routine from Giants Slugger, Barry Bonds

Jun 01 '03

Barry Bonds trains during the season as well as the off-season. His routine is designed by his personal trainer Greg Anderson, who has worked with the slugger for five years.

In the off-season, Bonds does 12-14 sets per workout, doing 3-4 sets for each exercise, 10 reps each set. On each day, he and Anderson will decide which exercises to do, choosing from among the list below. They always do at least two warm-up sets before each session.

During the season, Bonds will still maintain his Monday through Friday workouts, depending on his travel schedule. He'll drop his total daily sets to 8-10 during the season, but keep reps and types of exercises similar to his off-season routine. Here is his bodypart split and the exercises he chooses from for each training session.

Monday: Chest and Biceps
Standing cable flye; standing cable biceps curl; incline Hammer-machine press; seated one-arm dumbbell curl; flat-bench dumbbell press; bench push-up; exercise-ball crunch.

Tuesday: Quads and Hamstrings
Single-leg extension; two-leg extension; lying hamstring curl; adductor machine; abductor machine; single-leg press; leg press; barbell squat; walking lunge

Wednesday: Back and Abs
Wide-grip pulldown; close-grip pulldown; seated row; pull-up; low-back extension; standing calf raise; seated calf raise; crunch.

Thursday: Shoulders and Triceps
Seated rear-delt machine; one- or two-arm dumbbell lateral raise; one- or two-arm dumbbell front raise; cable triceps pressdown (with straight bar or rope); standing machine dip.

Friday: Quads and Hamstrings
Single- or two-leg extension; lying leg curl; adductor machine; abductor machine; unilateral or regular leg press; barbell squat; stiff-legged deadlift; seated leg curl; standing single-leg hamstring curl; exercise-ball crunch.
