Two great Hall of Fame outfielders both saw their career averages drop below .300 while facing the same pitcher. They never broke the .300 mark again. Which outfielders were they, and which pitcher was it against?

One of them Mickey?

Could one be Kaline?

The two are Mantle and Kaline - good job XD and YL.
Now who was the pitcher who dropped them both below .300?
Hint: He's not a Hall of Famer.
Guess Frank Robinson and Al Kaline, though F-Rob would probably have been primarily a DH when it happened.
Oops, our posts must have crossed. No idea on the pitcher.

Someone who was in the AL from 1968 to 1974, not in the HOF, not on the Yanks or Tigers, tought to hit...........hmmmmm.
Wilbur Wood?

Dave McNally?

Not Wood or McNally.
Mantle went from .2995 to .2994 in 1968, it happened to Kaline in 1973.

Jim Kaat?

I'll guess Palmer, though it doesn't have to be a great pitcher. All he needed was two particular outs.

But Palmer's in the hall...unless there's another Palmer that played in that time.

The hot pitcher during that time frame was Mickey LOL Lolich.

Lolich was a Tiger though...eliminated from consideration for the question.

I forgot the non-HOF restriction

Not Kaat, Palmer, or Lolich.
Though he was, at one time, a teammate of Kaat.

Not Perry either.
This is the clue that I finally needed to get it: He's most famous for his years in Boston.

That's him. Whiffed Mantle on June 28, 1968, to lower the Mick's career average to .299 permanently, and then whiffed Kaline on September 23, 1973, to push his average down to .299 as well.
