Press conference today in NY to announce Omar as the new GM of the Mets.
Could this not wait until Monday? Is it not a tad tacky to do this while he's still under contract with the Expos for 2004, even if there is just ~4 games left?
Could you see this happening with any other GM, outside of the one working for a team owned by MLB?

Tacky? The way the whole Montreal franchise was handled was tacky

I guess the first correction is that he is going to be named "Director of Baseball Operations". The current GM will remain in place.
Both franchises are already out of the post-season chase so this isn't a big deal ethically. The real problem is who is going to steer the Expos ship with Omar gone??

There's not a thing he can do with/for Montreal/DC. With last night being the final night in Montreal, no big deal. And he's in town for the weekend, why not now to show your fans you're serious about next year. Get a few more butts in the seats for the weekend perhaps. Perhaps not. I don't really know.

As far as we know, MLB is still the owner of the Expos/Senators/Nats whatever, right? I can see Omar wanting to stick it to his bosses.
