I'm looking for a player who caught in the big leagues between 1961 and 1982 - who was also a minor league manager for the Cubs during the period between 1986 and 1989. Is it George Mitterwald? Someone else?

According to the SBE, there was no player whose career started in 1961 and ended in 1982.

I did some more data manipulation and determined there were only players in the majors who were active in both 1961 and 1982.

They were Jim Kaat and Carl Yastrzemski, who definitely would not be the player you're looking for.

Actually, I meant that he could have played any time between 61 and 82 - not from 61 to 82.

Maybe Randy Hundley he was the Cubs double-A manager

He's not the guy I'm looking for...........
I was watching the game on YES on Sunday when Girardi talked about a minor league MGR that he had - and his theory on stopping brushbacks - but, Joe would not offer his name. But, he said to Kaat, "Kitty, you probably once threw to him" and Kaat said that he did. That eliminates Randy, IIRC.

Was Johnny Oates ever a minor league manager for the Cubs? I'm pretty sure he was a coach with them at some point.

He never caught Kaat, IIRC.

So... what was Mr. X's theory on stopping brushbacks?

So... what was Mr. X's theory on stopping brushbacks? It was a good one.

When someone throws at one of your guys, you throw at two of their guys. It's 2 for 1, which was Drysdale's theory. But, you throw at their two best hitters - regardless of who they hit on your team.

The theory is that an offending team would rather stop throwing at your guys than risk losing their two top hitters to injury.

FWIW, they may have been teammates on the 1980 Yanks as well.

Consulting baseball-reference, Oates' career ended in 1981. I believe he coached & managed in the Yankees' system, but I am unsure of what years.

I have a bunch of Cubs yearbooks from the 80's lying around somewhere; I'll consult them later on

First drafted by Baltimore in 1967, Oates returned to the Orioles organization in 1988 as manager of their Rochester (Triple-A) affiliate after spending two years managing Yankee farm teams and four years as a coach for the Cubs.
