Continuing a long-standing baseball tradition, five Yankees rookies were required to make Thursday night's road trip to Boston in costumes provided to them by their teammates. In recent years, rookies have been dressed up in outfits ranging from Hooters girls' uniforms to pimp gear, but this year's crop had a whole new theme: Elvis.

"I don't want to get blamed for that one," Derek Jeter said. "If they left it up to me, it would be a lot worse than this."

Bubba Crosby, Scott Proctor, Brad Halsey, Dioner Navarro and Andy Phillips returned from the dugout after the game to find their Elvis outfits hanging in their lockers where their regular clothes had been before.

The five rookies dressed in their costumes, posed in the middle of the clubhouse for a picture and then were told to go sign autographs for fans outside Yankee Stadium for 10 minutes.

"I'm just glad I have all my body parts covered," Proctor said. "I've heard some bad rumors about these things."

"I'm glad I was a rookie 10 years ago. This is pretty bad," said Alex Rodriguez. "When I did it in Seattle, it wasn't fun. We had these antique dresses on. The signing is the worst part."

There are ROOKIES playing for the Yankees?

I didn't think anyone ever made it all the way through the Yankees system to the bigs. I just figured they were trade bait.

FWIW, I was surprised that they just made them sign outside for a few minutes. IIRC, the usual custom is to make them walk thru the airport like that too. Maybe post 9/11, that's asking too much?
