What is the likelihood of Buck O'Neil being enshrined someday?

He's not? Wow.
I think it depends on where you come down on contributors, such as sports writers. If they should be in, he should be in...one of the most significant non-players in the past 50 years.

Buck is a great ambassador for the game but is not currently eligible for the hall because he is on the VC. Personally I love the guy but he is not an HoFer.

Buck is one of those few guys, like Lefty O'Doul, who did much for baseball off the field, as well as on the field.
As long as numbers are everything to voters, he has no chance. When fame and service and contribution to baseball count, he has a chance.

If they ever get the thing going for scouts, like they have now for writers, could he get in that way? Did he do much scouting?

I believe he discovered/signed Lou Brock

And, IIRC, he did do some MLB scouting for KC, no?

For years he was a fixture at Royals games directly behind home plate charting pitches or some such.
A treasured possession of mine is a Monarchs hat that was autographed by Buck.
I also have a CD of Buck telling his Negro League stories. Quite entertaining.

I have his story on DVD too.
Ten years from now, when my kids are old enough to watch it and understand it, I'm going to make sure they watch it.

It's true that he wasn't a great ball player, but he's considerably better than most people think before they look at his numbers. Won a Negro League Batting title, after all.
First black coach in the majors, and as everyone has said, a great ambassador of the game. He signed Ernie Banks!
