What's a game score and how is it calculated?

Game Score is a metric developed by Bill James to evaluate the quality/dominance of a starting pitchers effort. The calculation as listed by Baseball-Almanac is:

"Start with 50 points. Add 1 point for each out recorded, (3 points per inning). Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th. Add 1 point for each strikeout. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed. Subtract 1 point for each walk."

For instance, in Randy Johnson's perfect game his Game Score would be 50+27+10+13-0-0-0-0 = 100

Another example, Kerry Wood's 20 strike out one-hitter:

50+27+10+20-2-0-0-1 = 104.

The 100 is not emblematic of a "perfect" score or the best you could do. Johnson could have gotten as much as another 14 points had he struck out more batters. In the old days when guys would occasionally pitch more than nine innings you could get more points for the innings pitched and the batters retired.

The boys at BP have been suggesting for quite a while that the A's should unload Zito while his perceived value exceeds his actual value.

Why the fascination with Zito? He's not the ace anyway? Where's Lieber's game scores?

Lieber did not win the Cy Young two years ago. His 2004 season is right about what you would expect based on what he's done the last 2 years.

BTW, Smed, while this is a private forum, baiting is still not allowed. You're not fooling anyone with the choice of Leiber. If you want to start trouble, go do it in your own backyard. Thanks.

Tough year for the kid, I guess. Oh well, the A's better get rid of him. Well, I guess the Indians could spare Jose Jimenez in an even-up trade. The A's need bullpen help, right?
