View Full Version : Playing Lotto

I'm going to the Yankee game tonight.
Pedro v. Halsey.

Most probabilities say that the Sox should win tonight, all things considered.

So, I'm going to this game with a "Lotto" approach.

I'll be in it, but, fully expect to lose - so, when it happens, the letdown is not that bad. But, if NY wins, the feeling will be huge, on the positive side, like winning the Lotto.

The Lotto approach is fun. Is this how fans of the Pirates and Tigers (and other losing teams) go to games?

What a rude thing to say. I would hope that most people go to the games expecting or at least HOPING their teams will win, regardless if it's the Yankees or the Tigers or Pirates (No one goes to the Expos games, so I can't say use that as an example).

I know every time I went to the Indians games back in the 80's, I always had the hope and expectation that my Indians would win. Even if I was going to watch the Indians play against the Yankees, or a pitcher like Pedro or Randy Johnson.

If you don't have some hope or expectation of victory, what's the point of going? I think the "lotto" approach would REALLY sap the life and enjoyment from a game.

Maybe Yankee fans really are spoiled.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude.
I always go to a game with the hope that my team will win.
But, I do go into games, sometimes, with the expectation that they will not win - - if the probabilities are stacked against them.

I thought that other fans may use this approach as well.

In a macro sense, that is how I approach the entire season...

Yes... I'm a nutty Red Sox fan, and I would be soooooooooo out of my mind happy if they won the World Series. Every year. Same story.

Do I expect them to win? No way.

I do watch and attend games expecting them to win.

Funny... for each of 162 games I expect a win... but in the big picture I keep things tempered.

It was a powerball night. For sure.
Got home at 1 AM. Could not fall asleep until 3 AM. It was wild.

We watched the game on tv and were still so wired we didn't get to bed until 2. I had to tape the replay for my father and a friend who is out of town. I nearly got sucked into staying up to watch the whole replay just to see it all again. Maybe it's just that it is the most recent in memory, but right now I can't think of a better regular season game I've seen. Lots of credit to Damon for sticking around and taking the interview after the game. People Longhorns could learn from his example.

There's gonna be a lot of tired people in NY and Boston today.
The NY crowd will feel it less.

Thousands of Sox fans at the Stadium last night. Schilling, Pedro and Nixon shirts all over the place. Man, did they hear it leaving the park.

I have no idea why someone would wear the colors and run the risk of having to take that abuse.

That's a fun time at the park?

Unless I'm going to a game to see a specific player or team, I don't go to a game expecting to see the home team lose.

Ever? Let's say it was Randy Johnson, in 2001, coming to Pittsburgh to play the Pirates, and Omar Olivares was starting for Pittsburgh. Omar's ERA is 6.55 coming into the game.

You go to that game expecting that the Bucs will win?

This part of the Boston crowd is feeling it pretty heavily today......

Maybe to show some pride in the team they root for, and to show the team that they were there to support them ? Maybe hoping some of that pride and enthusiasm woul drub off on the team ? Maybe expecting to be treated respectfully by the fans of the other team and not get that abuse ? ;) Not that we would ever dish that out up here
The times when I have done that (and my attire is a little more subdued in that situation, but I will usually have a Sox hat on), I expect some verbal abuse, and I ignore it, because it doesn't matter to me. Of course I also wouldn't be yelling "Yankees $uck" either (which I unbelievably could hear coming over the TV broadcast of Wednesday night's game !). On the other hand, I don't yell that up here either - it is close to the most moronic and pitiful thing some Red Sox fans do.

Congrats to the Yankees on winning a very exciting game. Hopefully we will learn something from it.

Can the players really tell what the fans are wearing in the stands?

Deep Blue

Certainly not while the game is going on, but don't you think they occasionally notice if there are large numbers of fans wearing their colors ? Or maybe I am stupidly naive, and the players really don't care. Wouldn't be the first time for me....

Personally, I think players would notice if Pam Anderson was anywhere in the stands. But, if they notice the two guys sitting in Box 453, Section 12, Row G, Seats 1 & 2, wearing Sox hats.............I dunno.

You are correct - I was thinking more about some of the larger groups that make trips out of it. NESN (I think) showed a coupe of good sized groups the other night. And when we were in San Frnacisco a couple of weeks ago, it was clear there was a lot of red in the crowd, and lot of pro-Sox noise.

At this point I'd be happy if some of the Red Sox noticed there was a baseball being hit their way....

I wouldn't have high expectations of the Bucs beating Johnson based on that pitching matchup. That's why I specified I'd go to a game to see a specific player.

Plus, even if a loss could be expected I wouldn't necessarily think I'd have little chance of winning. Even a bad team has about a 35-40% chance of winning any game.

I've worn the colors in the Bronx. Why?
