Who is the only player to Rookie of the Year and win
the Most Valuable Player Award in his second season?

Cal Ripken Jr

It can't be Cal. He'd won ROY in 1982, his 2nd season (only 23 games in 1981). Robin Young won AL MVP in 1982; Cal, in 1983.

If you wanna be technical, the answer is Fred Lynn.

:loud: I thought the same thing! Guess, now, we have to add Ichiro too? ;)

Yog, you're kidding right? I know you didn't just start following baseball.

I'd meant Robin Yount, not Robin Young. Is that what you were referring to?

Actually, you can't. Remember, Ichiro was a "true rookie". (In MLB experience only, of course)

It seems we need another clarification from BB. Does the question mean a player who

A) came up in Year 1, played just a little and was still a rookie in Year 2 when he won the ROY and MVP (Lynn), or

B) was ROY one year, then won the MVP the following year (Cal)

"B" makes sense to me for two reasons:

If "A" were right, it would seem that the question would be phrased "Who won the ROY & MVP the same season, after having had a cup of coffee the previous year?" That's kind of silly, and not up to BB's standard.

Also, the title "No Sophomore Jinx" indicates continued success the year following the ROY

No. You wrote:

- - - My questions was: you're kidding right? I know you didn't just start following baseball.

- - - - - which I asked because most baseball fans know that 1982 would be considered his rookie season and not his "2nd season."

I realize 1982 was his rookie year since 23 games in 1981 isn't a full season. I should've made 1982 to be his "first season", but made 1981 to be. Technical error on my part. OK now? :p

Great Job Yogi, it was Cal Jr.
Yogi quote " If only I can remember everything I forgot, that
