In Larry Dierker's book, he says that the two most important stats for pitchers are BR/9 IP and Opp. SLG%.
He says that a pitcher can give up HRs, like a Schilling or a Maddux, as long as he doesn't walk people or give up a lot of hits. On the flip side, he says that a pitcher like Glavine can give up hits and walks, and still win, just as long as he does not give up HRs.
I want to run numbers to test this out - but, it's almost impossible to get a pitcher's Opp SLG%, or even some of the components, like XBH allowed, or even just HR allowed, on most stat sources - online or not.
What don't "we" keep the stats, more often, on pitcher's Opp SLG% or XBH allowed?
