Who was better: Jimmy Collins of Tommy Leach? Their stats appear about the same, but Leach had more longevity. They both played a mean 3B, but Leach also was a great defensive centerfielder?

My first thought was Jimmy Collins but Leach does have an arguement. His OPS+ was only 4 points lower than Collins but he had 1500 more Plate appearances. Collins played more games at 3b but Leach played in CF when he wasn't playing 3b. I would go with Leach.

IMO, Jimmy Collins was the better player, although Leach was very good. I would consider Collins a Hall of Fame player, but not Leach. Collins had a lifetine OPS+ of 113, Leach 109, so as hitters they were close. But Collins is generally regarded as the superior defensive player.

I don't know. They were very similar offensive players. I wouldn't think there would be that much to choose defensively. Their teams were equally successful. Tough call.

This is why I scratch my head why Collins is considered a HoF'er and Leach isn't. (I am not trying to get MORE marginal players inducted, just interested in the thought process that put Collins in and kept Leach out)
