Hi all. I am a Red Sox fan, and I really enjoy baseball.

I have long considered myself very much in the stathead end of the spectrum, but am bemused by a growing trend: More and more is being said about less and less in terms of performance analysis. This may be an offshoot of having achieved something near the limit of what our current and historical data can provide, or of the growing amount support for statistical treatment of performance yielding less clarity, or my brain getting a bit crusty (though I only turned 40 not so very long ago). I figure a combination of all three -- none of them are so whacked that they should be discarded.

I suppose there are various 'cycle of life' permutations regarding stats vs. tools, but I am here to post once in a while, not write a novel. :) Suffice to say, I enjoy thinking about the game...

welcome again! nice to have you aboard!

do you find that friends your age have the same stat inclinations as yourself? if not, do you get flak for it?

Interesting question...

I wouldn't characterize my friends my age (who are baseball fans) as particularly inclined toward or against stats, as a group.

Within the group, those who are specifically anti-stats have claimed that numbers can only tell you so much at the outset of a discussion, and that I cast a cold and calculating demeanor on the National Pasttime by the end of the discussion.

What is your experience with this?

What is your experience with this?i'm at NetShrine, am I not?

kidding aside, it's similar, though younger people tend to be more friendly towards baseball analysis (i'm 24). one of my co-workers, who's older (his son is about 15), is someone who's been more open-minded about this kinda stuff - i've given him some old copies of Baseball Prospectus and explain to him what people in the field are studying...
