Hairston has a broken finger, and is sidelined for at least five weeks: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-orioles-roberts&prov=ap&type=lgns

Just me, or does he get hurt a lot?

Its not just you.
Orioles fans were hoping either Hairston or Roberts would outright win the 2nd base job and the other would be dealt for something of value. Now, both are injury risks and are probably holding the job until Fontenot takes over in 05.

When I first saw the thread title, I thought Hairston had died.
I don't think they lose much having to put Roberts out there to play full-time in his place.

The O's would be better off with a guy that will stay healthy than the chronically injured Hairston.

Whoops! Though I wouldn't be that flippant about a death. Anything short of, perhaps.

What would the Yanks have to give up for him?
I hadn't heard any specific rumors, but as bad as the Yankees farm system is the Orioles' may be worse, so there might have been some opportunity for the O's to improve there.
A friend of mine suggests that Hairston's injuries are really Segui's fault, because the latter's glasslike nature has become an airborne contagion.

obviously he has been injured a lot but broken bones are usually more down to bad luck than being injury prone. if he was tearing muscles or wrenching joints i could see how he could be labelled as injury prone but breaks are breaks - probably down to trying to hard to win a job that IMO he deserves anyway. I'm no big fan of his or the o's but i thought he turned the corner last year before his unlucky break and i thought he earned the 2b spot this year (now i know someone will throw a heap of rcaa and ops type stats to prove me wrong but i still think he was showing something)

well, i won't try to prove you wrong, i'll just see what comes out:RCAA RCAA AVG OBA SLG PA OWP
1 Jerry Hairston Jr. -2 .271 .353 .372 259 .465
2 Brian Roberts -4 .270 .337 .367 512 .472 their production was extremely similar with the bat, so Roberts didn't represent too much of a downgrade after the Hairston injury. So let's ask the question of whether some type of platoon would make sense: 2001-03 splits
Roberts (861 AB) Hairston (1176 AB) Advantage
vs LHP 239 266 331 273 326 394 Hairston
vs RHP 266 335 356 246 322 349 Roberts
Home 264 325 355 279 359 396 Hairston
Road 252 308 343 227 287 326 Roberts
Day 282 336 401 255 347 359 Roberts
Night 248 308 327 251 313 361 Hairston
Pre AS 268 329 363 262 331 359 even
PostAS 249 304 336 241 313 363 so there are a few ways Mazzilli can be creative - Roberts is slightly better against RHP (he is a switch-hitter, after all), Hairston is much better at Camden, and Roberts is a much worse hitter at nighttime. They both slow down late in the season, but Hairston doesn't lose his power.
Their fielding stats over the past coupla years are also pretty even and they both bring a little speed to the table.
Overall, I would give a slight advantage to Hairston, but BAL may be best served in trying to deal one of them, if not both, before the arrival of Fontenot.

-2 vs -4.... that would make Hairston twice as good as Roberts !!!!!

Adjusted for playing time, you've got -4 vs -4

but what was hairston before he got injured - i would guess not as bad as minus 4 ( i hope anyway or my argument is gone !).
