Personal Commentary: Dear Jason - please, get a freakin' clue. You are one of five current players who has been mentioned by name in the BALCO mess. You further flamed the fire by showing up to Spring Training with considerable less mass this year and then tried to cover that up with a lame excuse of "It's only four pounds and it's from giving up fast food." Dude, at this point, anything you can do to say out of this controversy spotlight is what you must do. Keep your mouth shut and just play great baseball. Pretend you are Jackie Robinson in 1947. React to nothing that they throw at you. Complain about nothing. This whining about not being able to perform or stay off the DL without your buddy as your shadow is an insult to the trainers and coaching staff of the Yankees. In the words of Mike & Mike in the morning, "Just shut up!"
OK, that's my :2cents: Thanks for indulging.

And an accurate two cents, indeed.

I second Boomer's post. Giambi should not speak until the season begins, at the very earliest.
I can see Giambi's point, but now is definitely a time for him to just lay low and go with the flow.

Amen. Between suspicion of steroids, and the coddled-primadonna implications of whining that his team won't hire his trainer, Giambi is stupid to talk to the press this way.

Hmmmm. A self-absorbed millionaire. Is anyone shocked here?

Why is he self-absorbed because he want to take care of himself. Just because he is associated with Balco he is supposed to stop working out and gain 20 pounds because you want him to? Why should Giambi care if his fans are suspicious for having a trainer? His job is to HIT and if having a trainer helps him hit, who cares?
I don't understand this at all. He has not been convicted of anything, he has been mentioned in a case that has more holes than swiss cheese. What happened to due process?

Yes. And imagine the talking he's going to have to do if, come All-Star break, he's played most of the games and has, oh, say... only 12 HRs.

He is self-absorbed because he simply must have this member of his entourage, his own personal batting-practice pitcher and the guy "He could see where my strength was at, see if I'm tired, or maybe I got some nagging injuries."
It's too hard to do that away from the park?

Well, when you are a baseball player and you pretty much live at a ballpark, then yes it might be a little tough to do that away from the park. When is he supposed to do it? I don't think that makes him self-absorbed, just concerned about the way he plays the game. If he thought a member of the Yankees staff could tell him those things he proabably wouldn't have a trainer. I really don't think having a trainer has anything to do with ego.

Giambi has been working with the guy for the last 10 years, no?

We'll have to agree to disagree here. I think there's a pretty thin line between "this guy is helping me keep in my best physical shape" and " I need my boys around to keep me happy."

Physical Therapist and personal trainers are an occupation. Good ones are hard to come by. Maybe this is more than "one of his boys."
 Some therapist are wonderful. :D

Why should one player get to have his own personal fitness and health professional, rather than consulting with the army of fitness and health professionals employed by his team, like the other 24 guys on the roster do?

Belated update on this: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/8380484.htm
FWIW, on Thursday evening, Sweeney Murti of WFAN did a report on the trainer in question - Bob Alejo.
Turns out that the guy is a jerk and not liked by many in the Yankee's group. Reportedly, he's a loud mouth who does not know when to shut up and he has pissed off some Yankee players and staff on flights, etc.
Murti added that Jeter, A-Rod, and others (Posada and Bernie, IIRC) all have personal trainers and there are no issues with them or these players. As Murti said, put it this way, I would not know the trainers of the others if I saw them or heard their name, but, I do know Bob Alejo - - he stands out that much.
Giambi was supposed to be such a team guy. If this guy is such a pain, why not set him straight Jason?

Everybody has a blind spot. Given his brother's reputed behavior, perhaps this is Giambi's.

You get close enough to the leopard and you can't see his spots.

How is this any different from you, me and everybody else on this list having specific friends that we get along with that specific other people don't?
Applying your criticism to Giambi, aren't each of us equally at fault in our own lives?

Alejo is Giambi's employee as much as he is his friend. He should be able to get him under control.
If an employee of mine traveled with my family and made remarks to them which upset the family, trust me, that employee would be addressed.

And how is that hypothetical related to the situation with Giambi's trainer?
There is a big difference between an employee travelling with your family and upsetting your family vs. an employee travelling with your co-workers and upsetting your co-workers.
