He even raised a brand new issue, saying home runs were down last season because "the balls are softer." Bonds said he cut one open and compared it to an older baseball, and "they just string them a little bit differently."

Then he stopped and said, "That'll be another controversy. Truth is truth."


Did he open it up with his bare hands? ;)

OK. seriously, any validity to the claim of softer balls in 2003?

It wouldn't suprise me if they tinkered with the balls a bit. It was time to move the cycle back towards pitching.

Impossible to say for sure one way or the other, without an independent study of both balls.

...said that this was "crap" instead saying threat younger pitching was on the rise and that players are getting"skinnier"...Craig,love the new logo

A few years ago they were saying the balls were wound tighter. Tests and tests and tests showed ... nothing. This year they are wound looser? whatever.

I'd say it's just better pitching. Offense exploded for a while, so gradually teams probably focused their scouting efforts more on pitchers.
