1) The Braves signed free agent 3B Vinny Castilla to a 2 year, $8 million contract.

Castilla hit .467 SLG, .397 OBA, .775 OPS, -18 RCAA, .394 OWP, 4.35 RC/G, 69 RC in 146 games in 2001--24 with the Devil Rays and 122 with the Astros. Despite his alleged career revival in Houston, Castilla had -11 RCAA during his time with the Astros.

This was the 3rd consecutive time that Castilla had a double digit negative RCAA and the 4th time in his career, while he has both -109 career RCAA and RCAP.

Castilla's signing means Chipper Jones will move to LF.

2) The Astros signed free agent Cs Gregg Zaun to a 2 year, $2.3 million contract and Scott Servais to a minor league contract, with an invitation to spring training.

Zaun had a good year, in limited playing time, hitting .536 SLG, .377 OBA, .913 OPS, 6 RCAA, .630 OWP, 7.50 RC/G, 25 RC in 39 games with the Royals. It was the 2nd consecutive time Zaun had a positive RCAA. He has a .727 career OPS, compared to his league average of .777 and C average of .731, -15 RCAA and 9 RCAP.

Servais spent most of the 2001 season in AAA and played just 11 games in the majors. He has a .681 career OPS, compared to his league average of .766 and C average of .723, -105 RCAA and -60 RCAP in his 11 year major league career.

3) According to the Toronto Star, the BlueJays are trying to trade SS Alex Gonzalez, 2B Homer Bush and Raul Mondesi and/or Shannon Stewart.

4) According to the Chicago Sun Times, the Cubs want to make a trade for a SS and could be interested in Neifi Perez.
