1) The Yankees traded OF David Justice to the Mets for 3B Robin Ventura.

This is a deal that could help both teams.

Ventura hit .419 SLG, .359 OBA, .778 OPS, 1 RCAA, .509 OWP, 5.11 RC/G, 70 RC in 142 games in 2001. While it was the 4th time in the past 5 years in which his OPS was under .800, he's never gone under .777 during that time. Even though he's unlikely to ever return to his 32 RCAA/.908 OPS form, Ventura's still capable of providing league average performance while serving as a stopgap measure while the Yankees wait for prospect Drew Henson to be ready. Also, given the choice of Ventura or Enrique Wilson, Ventura's a better choice 101 times out of 100.

Justice hit .584 SLG, .377 OBA, .961 OPS, -1 RCAA, .493 OWP, 56 RC in 111 games in 2001. This was a big drop from his .961 OPS/33 RCAA form in 2000.

Justice has made a habit of having big drops in OPS, with this being the 4th time he dropped at least 75 points. In each of the previous times, Justice bounced back the next year.

1991-93: .880, .805, .871
1994-96: .958, .844, .923
1997-99: 1.013, .839, .889

If they keep him, the Mets need Justice to bounce back again. But, there is speculation that the Mets will try to move him in a subsequent trade.

2) The BlueJays traded P Billy Koch to the A's for minor leaguers 3B Eric Hinske and P Justin Miller. To make room on the 40 man roster, the BlueJays designated C Alberto Castillo for assignment.

Koch had a 4.80 ERA and 0 RSAA in 2001. In his 3 year career, he has a 3.57 ERA, compared to his league average of 4.64, and 32 RSAA.

Miller, 24, was ranked as the A's #8 prospect in John Benson's new minor league book and had a 4.75 ERA in AAA in 2001. Hinske, 24, was ranked as the A's #10 prospect in John Benson's new minor league book and had a .894 OPS (.521 SLG, .373 OBA) in AAA in 2001.

3) According to the LA Daily News, "In a potential franchise-rocking move, the Dodgers are near a deal to send six-time All-Star Gary Sheffield and pitcher Luke Prokopec to the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Jermaine Dye and closer Billy Koch, according to baseball sources.

"The trade could be completed as early as today, but last-minute details could be deal-breakers, sources said."

According to the LA Times, "The Dodgers believed they were so close to getting Koch and Oakland Gold Glove outfielder Jermaine Dye for Sheffield and pitchers Luke Prokopec and Mike Trombley that members of the team's media relations staff remained at Dodger Stadium until almost 9:30 p.m. in preparation for an announcement.

"The Athletics unexpectedly, though possibly only momentarily, shifted gears, but sources said the trade could be completed as soon as today."

6) The Astros re-signed free agent PH-OF Orlando Merced to a 1 year contract.

It was the 8th time in his 9 year career that Gomez had a negative RCAA, with the only exception being a whopping 0 in 1998, the 7th time he had a negative RCAP and the 6th time he had a .700 OPS or lower. Gomez has a .677 career OPS, compared to his league average of .772 and SS average of .706, -103 RCAA and -19 RCAP.

9) The Dodgers re-signed free agent P Jesse Orosco to a minor league contract.

Orosco, the all time leader in career G, had a 3.94 ERA and 0 RSAA in 35 games in 2001. He has a 3.04 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.05, and 123 RSAA.

10) The Royals re-signed free agent 2B Luis Alicea to a 1 year, $800,000 contract.

Alicea hit .367 SLG, .320 OBA, .687 OPS, -17 RCAA, .360 OWP, 4.09 RC/G, 45 RC in 113 games in 2001. Alicea has a .722 career OPS, compared to his league average of .763 and 2B average of .725, -52 RCAA and 5 RCAP.

11) According to the Washington Post, MLB and the union is working on a deal that would result in a no contraction pledge for the 2002 season, with one source saying the sides were on the brink of a deal and another saying the talks hit a potential deal breaking snag.
