TheTigers sign veteran Jason Johnson in a two year $7M deal. This has to improve the Tigers if Johnson can just match last year's 216 IP, 3 RSAA season.

The Tigers are improving, and may avoid 100 losses next year.
Johnson is pretty good, and young enough to get better.

Johnson should be benefit by Comerica as Lidle could be hurt by Great American Park trends. But as Lidle, Johnson both has a lower SO rate per 9 innings that means more work for the average defense of the Tigers. He will be an improve if he can throw 180-200 innings keeping healthy all the year but his injury's history is not good.

I think the Tigers overpaid but they probably have to in order to attract some talent. The key is that they aren't signing people to long term contracts like they did before.
On second thought the Braves signed John Thomson to a similar deal and he was about the same as Johnson. Jeff Suppan got a little less money from the Cardinals for the same number of years. Brian Anderson got a similar deal with the Royals.
Johnson becomes the #1 starter by default. I think he bumps someone other than Maroth. The Tigers rotation probably looks like this now Johnson, Cornejo, Maroth, Bonderman and 5th starter tbd.
Johnson will be helped a little by Comerica but not much. Camden has turned into a real pitcher's park as of late.
Comerica has masked the Tigers need for pitching. Their guys don't look as bad as they should because Comerica masks some faults. Johnson will help but they still need to sign anothe rpitcher or hope two of thei young guys pitch a lot better.

From what I see in the local Motown media, Maroth is going into the spring with a pretty solid grip on a rotation spot.

Maroth 33 -31 This is one place where RSAA can be a leading misleading. Knotts and Roney pitched half the innings that Maroth did and therefore had half the chance to stink. That's not to say Maroth wasn't bad it's just misleading to say he should be knocked out of the rotation because he had the worst RSAA.

Johnson was the one move where I felt the Orioles screwed up. He should have been kept.
I expect a good year out of him in Detroit...

You never know, but he was a monster today against a very good hitting club on their turf.

Saw on BBT that JJ is now wearing an insulin device on his belt while he pitches now - instead of doing shots between innings. Maybe this is the key for him now? Worth noting and watching.

I missed that. Amazing.
I am curious as to how this device works

Yeah, it caught my eye and ear during the broadcast. Kinda freaky. If it eliminates a typical distraction for him, it's gotta be a big plus.

SSSSURRE it's an insulin device. Probably a vaseline dispenser. (only joking!)
Anyway, if JJ stays healthy and makes 30+ starts, he could add 6 or 7 wins to their season total.

For Johnson, the win also marked the first time he pitched successfully with a pager-sized insulin pump on his belt. A diabetic, Johnson relies on the pump to send insulin into his system and keep his blood sugar at acceptable levels.
"This is the first year I've kept it on my belt," said Johnson, who previously removed the pump every time he pitched, and pricked his finger every two innings to check his blood sugar levels.
"I just never asked (Major League Baseball) before because I thought it was something that wasn't supposed to be there. But my trainers here asked baseball and they said it was okay. It's worked out great because I get tired and lethargic if I don't monitor my blood sugar levels correctly."
