1) The Orioles signed free agent LF Marty Cordova to a 3 year, $9.1 million contract.

Cordova hit .506 SLG, .348 OBA, .855 OPS, 12 RCAA, .585 OWP, 6.21 RC/G, 69 RC in 122 games in 2001. But, prior to 2001, Cordova didn't have a positive RCAA since 1996. He has a .797 career OPS, compared to his league average of .776 and positional average of .805, -12 RCAA and -41 RCAP.

2) The Rangers designated P Chris Michalak for assignment.

3) The Cubs re-signed free agent 2B Delino DeShields to a 1 year, $1.25 million contract.

DeShields hit .353 SLG, .344 OBA, .697 OPS, -2 RCAA, .483 OWP, 4.74 RC/G, 50 RC in 126 games in 2001--58 with the Orioles and 68 with the Cubs. It was the 2nd time in the past 3 years that DeShields had a negative RCAA and an OPS under .700. DeShields has a .733 career OPS, compared to his league average of .758 and positional average of .728, 49 RCAA and 97 RCAP.

4) The Yankees are reportedly on the brink of signing free agent P Steve Karsay to a 4 year contract, for $20-21 million.

5) According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the Orioles-Padres may be working on a Ray Lankford for Mike Bordick trade. Meanwhile, the Newark Star Ledger reports the Padres, Mets and Giants could be working on a 3 way trade that would send Lankford to the Mets, Robin Ventura to the Giants and Shawn Estes to the Padres.

6) According to the Toronto Sun, the Dodgers and BlueJays are working on a trade that would send P Billy Koch to the Dodgers. The Dodgers may be offering Ps Eric Gagne or Luke Prokopec, while the BlueJays want the Dodgers to take RF Raul Mondesi, but the Dodgers aren't interested in reacquiring him.

The LA Times also says the Dodgers are interested in Koch, but provided no details as to who they might include in a trade.

7) There's been speculation that the BlueJays would try to trade 1B Carlos Delgado and try to get him to waive his no trade clause. GM J.P Ricciardi says Delgado won't be traded.

8) The Redsox signed P Jeff Wallace, who they recently claimed off waivers from the Devil Rays, to a 1 year, $400,000 contract.

9) The Rangers signed P Juan Alvarez to a minor league contract.

10) According to the Detroit News, the Tigers are interested in free agent CF Kenny Lofton.

11) According to the Newark Star Ledger, the Yankees "explored a possible deal for Dodgers outfielder Gary Sheffield. But the Dodgers' initial demand for Andy Pettitte and Alfonso Soriano was ridiculous, and the Yankees don't believe the Dodgers will trade Sheffield for the prospect package (Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera) that they were willing to offer."

12) Luis Sojo said he was retiring, but he would be interested in coming back for another year, if the Yankees are interested in him. The Yankees aren't.

13) According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins will try to trade P Matt Clement and OF Eric Owens during the winter meetings.

14) According to the Boston Globe, "The Sox appear to have lost some interest in Seattle second baseman Bret Boone since they settled on Tony Clark as their No. 5 hitter, though they have not closed the door on Boone."

15) According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are expected to make an offer to free agent P David Wells today, while the team is also waiting to find out if Jose Guillen passed a medical exam on his knee.

HAHAHAHAHA

I can imagine Wells now: :eat:   :splat:

I can imagine Brenly wonder why they can't score runs with Guillen and Womack in the lineup.

This Ponzi scheme of a franchise will go 82-80 next year:D

The Rangers designated P Chris Michalak for assignment.

Something is up with this guy. Blue Jays let him go quick and Texas (!), who needs pitching, let him go. There's something about him that no one wants - - dunno? You could do worse for a 10th pitcher.

As to Karsay, it seemed that Yank fans I've chatted with are heavily in favor of him coming onboard.

Well, he's been there and back again in the minors, and he looks hittable after one time through the league.

I think he may have a career as the new Tony Fossas, but he's a slop ballin' lefty who will be 31 in January, so I can see why he's expendable if you need room on the 40-man.

So is Jamie Moyer. ;) BTW, CM has a NASTY pick-off. Just as good as Pettitte -- that comes in handy as a RP.

Not saying he isn't useful, but he's an easily expendable piece when you need 40-man roster room.

Michalick will be back in the bigs soon. He may be the next Greg "Life Is A" Cadaret, old chum!

Smed, old bean, I think you're on to something. Michalak is a good match for Cadaret, and lefties that don't throw hard enough to hurt their arms can last forever.

At least Cadaret can say he was once traded for Rickey Henderson.
