A. Do you know that the O's have raised prices? And,
B. It's a little premature to call them losers, no? I think they deserve the right to defer judgement on these moves, for 2004, at least until August 2004, or later.

While it is likely that the Orioles will finish either right around or below .500, these moves are aimed at 2005-2006. I don't think anyone, even the most die hard Oriole fans like me, expect to see Vlad and Tejada lead the team to the postseason in 2004.

An OF of Vlad, Bigby and Matos.
An INF of Gibbons, Roberts, Miggy, and (just guessing) Mora at 3B.
Pudge behind the plate.
That team could hit and pick it with the rest of the AL East.
Pitching is the trick.
Right now, the O's SP is no match for the staffs in Boston, NY, and Toronto.
Still, the O's with that hitting will not be a pushover in 2004, IMHO.
I believe that the O's are being opportunistic with most other teams cautious approach to the better hitting FA's this year, and then will get the arm(s) they need in the 2004 off-season. If you believe like I do that this next year is the Yankees last gasp, coupled with the O's continued success in the FA market along with good arms coming up in the farm system... I would be very excited about the O's in two seasons. (Of course, I would be IF I was an O's fan... ;)

The plan (if Vlad signs) is Mora at third. If not, Mora's probably in the outfield.
Hairston or Roberts will be at second, the other traded for pitching hopefully.

I know of a team that would take Roberts. ;)
The O's could very well be a sleeper. I am not going to easily discount them as losers. As a matter of fact, I am keeping both eyes on them.
I value their pitching more than some. Sophmore jinx should be over for 2 hot pitchers.

they'll be fun to watch....and they got some pitching when they robbed the giants last year....but they're not there yet

A: If you don't think they will have raise price's, continue in your dream world or let them lose big money! Now I see it is $72 mill, $12 mill for no glove, decling power # SS , is fool hardy
B: If you think they can compete with the Yankee's, Boston, and Toronto in 2004, Let me Know what drugs you take
Plus, Pudge & Vlad, there is no money left for anything else, PITCHING! For example

Has pitching been the Orioles problem the last few years? Not when compared to the fact that in this recent explosion of offense, they have had none. None.

ejlofgren,
I don't understand YOUR thinking. Everyone else in this thread made complete sense. What do you expect this Orioles team to do? Do you expect them to not sign any players and just sit back and wait for a miracle. They are signing big time players and building a team. How is that crazy? What is your logic of thinking?
If after getting those three players, you don't think that the Orioles will be able to compete with Toronto in 2004 your absolutely crazy. That 2-3-4 or 3-4-5 spot will be arguably the best in baseball if they get those players and no pitcher will want to face them.
Also, the 72 million dollar deal is after possible incentives. Basically they are paying Tejada 9 million per year. "decling power # SS"??? The guy was an MVP two years ago and is entering the prime of his career. Get a life man.

In regard to this comment, apparently you did not read swans post about the young arms in the Orioles farm system. Also, how exactly do you know there will be no money left? How do you know Peter Angelos will not open up his wallet and spend another 100 million next winter?

Not sure how I feel about this. They're obviously going to be an impressive offensive team. Can they just outscore everyone? Hasn't worked for Texas or to a lesser extent Boston. Keep in mind that they don't have Ponson and the 15ish wins he gave them last year. I don't know what they have as far as prospects, but I don't think their staff is all that bad. With the potential they have on offense I think they could be in good shape in 2005 if they pick up some middle relief and a front line starter.

The Orioles may be planning to win just on offense.....with only Jason Johnson to anchor the rotation. There's Rodrigo Lopez, Damian Moss, Eric DuBose, Omar Daal, and Kurt Ainsworth, with Jorge Julio and Buddy Groom in the bullpen.

I thought I read in the past that they might non-tender Johnson and cut Moss - - we'll have to wait and see.

I also read this. But I don't know if they can afford to lose both Moss and Johnson...
