View Full Version : Frank Solich - when 9-3 isn't good enough

Nebraska's firing of Frank Solich has stirred a great debate. He went 9-3 this season, and has gone 58-19 during his 6-year tenure. Trev Alberts has spoken in favor of the firing, but many other commentators seem angry.
Are there grounds for this controversy, or is Nebraska in the right for firing this guy? Are their goals too lofty, or exactly where they should be?

Nebraska won't get that new practice field if he's still there, since the boosters aren't feeling so generous these days.
That makes the firing the correct move.
He might've got the axe even if he went 10-2, if those two losses were OU and K-State (at home).
Big Red's real problem will be finding a coach who can topple Stoops' machine, mainly by gobbling up the prime out-of-state recruits that don't seem to be going to Lincoln anymore.

Tell the "boosters" to go to hell...Nebraska isn't the question mark, character wise, it once was.
This is about as bad as Alabama firing a good man like Bill Curry.

Unfortunately for Alabama, other than when Stallings was coaching them, the Tide haven't done a whole lot since dumping Curry, either.
Nebraska had better find the right coach, or they are probably going to end up with a similar fate.
This is about as bad as Alabama firing a good man like Bill Curry.Bill Curry is a good man. He's also a mediocre (at best) coach and a much worse announcer.
My logical brain says it is 'wrong' to fire Solich, but the business is what it is. Solich will be very well compensated for not coaching at Nebraska, and the university can move ahead with whatever they feel is in their best interests. I cannot generate any outrage over this.

It probably wasn't fair to fire Solich, but if Nebraska wants to return to being a real football powerhouse he had to go. He cannot and didnot recruit the kind of players you need to be among the best.
This year's 9-3 was a very soft 9-3. Other than OK State they beat no one.

My response to Solich would be 'what did you expect'? You take over a program like that and you had better win alot and often. If you agree to coach Nebraska, ND, Michigan, Texas..etc. you had better KNOW what is expected.

...Curry did well at bama[though he made the sin of losing to auburn.I think hes a fine announcer, one of my faves, actually.Solich has gotten WAXED repeatedly, Starting with Colorado a couple of years ago[and including his first season } Miami would have beaten them worse, But Cocher called off the dogs early in the thrid quater of the rose bowl, or they would have hung a 70 on the cornhuskers.Iwoa state smashed them,{last year} Mizzou, K state,Texas, they barely brealy beat a mediocore colorado team. He looked completley out of his element. Nebraska is in serious danger of becoming a second tier team...
