Who was the last AL player to win a batting average title with an average lower than their career BA going into the season?

Yaz in 67?

His career BA going into 1967 was .293, so he hit higher than his career average to win the title. It's more recent than 1967.

How about Tony Gwynn with .313 in 1988?

I'm asking for AL players for this one, although Gwynn was the last player to do it overall with his .313 in 1988 (his career BA entering '88 was .335).

Duh. Nice reading on my part.

I'll guess Carew in '72

You're very close--it was Carew but in a different year.

'78 with .333?

'78 with .333?
That's right! Carew won the 1978 title with a .333 mark and his career BA going into 1978 was .335.
Only one player accomplished this feat 3 separate years. Does anyone know who it was?

I'll guess Honus Wagner in 1906, 1909 and 1911.

I'll guess Honus Wagner in 1906, 1909 and 1911.
That's correct:

Player Year League BA for seas. Career BA entering seas.
Honus Wagner 1906 NL 0.339 0.349
Honus Wagner 1909 NL 0.339 0.346
Honus Wagner 1911 NL 0.334 0.343
