I was watching The Simpsons episode, Homer at the Bat, tonight. That was the one where Burns brought in the major leaguers as ringers.
I have an objection to one of the scenes--
The kids were choo-choo-choosing up sides for a game. Bart and Ralph were the captains.
As they walked by, Ralph got to choose Ken Griffey Jr., Wade Boggs and Jose Canseco.
I have to object to Ralph being the one who was the captain in that scene. It was too out of character for Ralph to make good selections.

There's a Tony LaRussa joke in here somewhere - I just need to think of it.

You are right, Lee. he would have chosen Lisa first.

Sometimes character is sacrificed for dramatic expediency. Sad but true.

If the Simpson's were totally logical, Captain Kirk, Homer would be dead...

ralph did win a science fair with unopened stars wars action figures against many brilliant projects once.
i think, though not a lot of, dumb luck is in his character.

Maybe despite everything else, Ralph is a baseball fan...

I think this episode was made before Ralph's reputation as the resident spaz was established. In this case he was just the random character to used to captain the team opposing Bart. Ralph's character was more fully developed in I Love Lisa which did not come out until the following season.
Quick trivia question: Who is the only other major league player to appear on The Simpsons?

I was thinking the same thing.
But, later on the same season 3 DVD, Ralph was eating paste.
