Universal Music, the world's top seller of music, is slashing their CD prices pretty dramatically. Because of the cuts, their offerings should drop from the $16.98 price to about $12.98:

Hopefully, Universal's move should signal the other companies to follow suit. About time this happened, since they've talked about it for the last 15 years. I guess it took flagging sales and illegal downloads to wake them up.
Do you think an across-the-board reduction in prices would increase sales while reducing online piracy? Or do you think people are too attached to getting music for free? I'm hoping this becomes a win-win for consumers and the music companies.

I think this move might be a little too late to help anything. A lot of people are going to start buying just one song for 99 cents and calling it good. Only the bands you really enjoy will get the full CD treatment.

I'm looking forward to it. Music companies had priced themselves out of my budget. If this signals a return of the $9.99 long-play, I can become a music buyer again.

CD's are brutally expensive and it isn't often the quality measures up to that price. The again, I have CD's that are virtually priceless to me.

This move is long overdue. I think that the other music companies will follow suit on this. While piracy may be reduced by the move it will not be stopped all together. There's going to be people like me that rip their cd's and then post them to private servers to share with friends. Most of the new music I have come by for the past few years I have obtained in this manner. Cheaper cd's may mean more sales, but the genie is out of the bottle on this. The music industry always seems to adapt to the introduction of new technology. Just ask the sheet music companies.

This is great - of course I buy up to 10 a month. If there's any industry with its head up its keister more than baseball, it's the major label music industry.

I figured you'd be as happy as anyone on here, given your CD habit!

Probably a bit late for me at this point. I already downloaded most every song I could think of worth doing. It would have to be somebody I really enjoy to buy a whole CD at this point.

Actually it might since the price of used CDs has crept up with the advancing prices of new CDs
