Who was the first player to wear a number?

I've heard two different things, one is that Cleveland was the first team to put numbers on the uniform and the other is that The Yankes were the first to permanently put numbers on the uniform, both on the same date.
Either way I have no idea who the first player was.

Hint: First means first - not first to be permanent. ;)

:loud: Not Harder Chris.
This is a very famous player that more people should know - - in addition the the Q outstanding:
he was the 1st player to become a play-by-play announcer,
he was the 1st batter to ever face Boston's lefthander Babe Ruth in the majors,
he was the 1st Canadian to pinch hitter in a World series game.
Not too shabby a trivia resume.
