Purchased the new Brad Paisley album MUD ON THE TIRES. Unlike most of the current crop of alleged country artists, Paisley is well grounded in the art form. MUD ON THE TIRES is probably the best country album since the releases in 1986 of STORMS OF LIFE by Randy Travis and GUITAR TOWN by Steve Earle.

It is clear that Paisley had a lot of fun recording this album which contains 17 cuts (one hidden) including some of the most tongue-in-cheek lyrics recorded in many a year. Take for instance "That's Love" and "Famous People"
(lyric excerpts given for both):

That's Love
writers Chris DuBois/Brad Paisley/Kelley Lovelace (ASCAP)

There ain't a woman in the world that wants to hear the word yes
When she asks if you think that she looks chubby in that dress
And if she cooks all day you better eat it with a smile
It doesn't matter if it tastes just like bad gravy on a Goodyear tire

Yeah, yeah, yeah all right so you bend the truth
Yeah, yeah, yeah that's somethin' that you'll have to get use to

or "Famous People"

Famous People
writers Chris DuBois/Chris Wallin (ASCAP)/(SESAC)

Well you're the first car in an hour or so
I'm glad you stopped in, it's sure been slow around here today
Just like every day
Well I couldn't help but notice your California plates
And I thought I recognized that name on your credit card
You're a movie star
I can't wait to get back home and tell all my buddies
That I met one of the most famous people in the country

Chorus
Well, I only go to movies when I'm down in Bowling Green
And cable don't come out this far so I never watch TV
I know you played in something but I'm gonna need some help
Hey wait, weren't you in Cannonball Run, no, oh well

Allow me to introduce myself
My name ain't John, this is somebody else's greasy shirt my name's Kurt
This is the town that I grew up in
I've never seen L.A., the closest I've been to Hollywood is Hollywood
But when you get back to Beverly Hills, you can tell all your buddies
That you met one of the most famous people in the country

Chorus
'Cause I caught the record small mouth down on Kentucky Lake
And I threw the winning touchdown pass the night that we won state
And I'm still signing autographs after all these years
Oh, yeah I guess I'm gonna need yours, sign um here

"Celebrity" was the last single, which was made into a hilarious video starring Jason Alexander and William Shatner. There is also a duet with Alison Krause plus two instrumentals including "Make A Mistake With Me" and "Spaghetti Western Swing" (featuring Redd Volkart on the guitar with comments by George Jones, Bill Anderson & Little Jimmy Dickens), and some very good straight ahead country ("Hold Me In Your Arms And Let Me Fall" is a standout).

FIVE STARS - check it out

I've got it coming in an Amazon order, because I didn't mind his last album and I really like Alison Krauss. I heard "Whiskey Lullaby," and it sounded good, so I thought I'd take a chance.

I hope you're right about it being a classic, because I haven't been too impressed with a lot of country music this year.

Paisley went to the high school where I used to teach, although he graduated before I got there. Met some of his family, though. By all reports, a nice, normal guy.

And that "Celebrity" video is a laugh riot!

I love that video! I laughed pretty hard at it, quite clever with lots of celebs - Shatner, Jason Alexander, Belushi, quite fun.

I have always liked Brad Paisley but don't own an album, this might be the nudge to do so.

Paisley is a "classic country" guy. Someone wanted to use one of the songs he had written and record it as a "pop" song a year or two ago, before he was really big, but he said no. Said it just wasn't his stuff without a pedal steel guitar, didn't have the right twang.
