1) Former Orioles and Rangers MGR Johnny Oates was diagnosed with a brain tumor and will have surgery later in the month. Oates was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, which is the most aggressive form of primary brain tumors, and the average survival rate is only about a year.

2) The union has filed a grievance against contraction.

3) The Phillies exercised their $4.5 million option on P Omar Daal.

Daal had a 4.46 ERA and -4 RSAA in 2001, his 2nd consecutive year with a negative RSAA. He has a 4.48 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.41, and -11 RSAA.

There are rumors that the Phillies are looking to trade him.

Update--Daal was traded to the Dodgers today for 2 minor leaguers.

4) The Astros gave GM Gerry Hunsicker a contract extension through the 2004 season.

5) The Tigers signed OF Ryan Jackson and P Brian Powell to minor league contracts.

Jackson hit .331 SLG, .250 OBA, .581 OPS, -8 RCAA, .252 OWP, 2.78 RC/G, 10 RC in 79 games with the Tigers this year. He has a .637 career OPS, compared to his league average of .768 and 1B average of .841, -23 RCAA and -37 RCAP in 222 games (487 PA) during his 3 year career (since 1998, excluding 2000).

Powell pitched in 1 game for the Astros this year. He has a 6.48 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.64, and -23 RSAA in 28 career games (22 starts) during his 3 year career (since 1998, excluding 1999).

6) The Baltimore Sun reports "The Orioles are interested in signing another power hitter, such as free-agent Houston Astros outfielder Moises Alou, while improving a pitching staff that's virtually certain to miss last April's Opening Day starter, Pat Hentgen, for the entire 2002 season. The club has mulled making free-agent overtures to Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Chan Ho Park, Braves reliever Steve Karsay, Cleveland Indians swing man Dave Burba, and Oakland Athletics closer Jason Isringhausen."

7) According to the NY Post, Twins P Rick Reed says he wants to be traded back to the Mets.

8) According to the Contra Costa Times, the Giants are shopping P Shawn Estes, with the Redsox and Brewers interested.

9) According to the Newark Star Ledger, the Yankees are interested in outmaking C Mike DiFelice.

Yankees fans should actually be thrilled with the team's performance in the World Series. All year I've had to read their claims that there's nothing wrong with outmakers, as long as they wear Yankee uniforms. In the World Series, the team did an exceptional job at outmaking.

10) According to the NY Daily News, the Mets are interested in Barry Bonds.

11) Prior to this year, there were only 3 cases in which a pitcher pitched 30+ games in both leagues in a season, with all of them coming in the past few years.

This year alone, there were 5.

This is said with my heart more than my head, but I would send Chen to the Twins to get Reed back.

You could never be my GM. Big swing in age and bucks there. Too much.
