The Marlins version of Alex Gonzalez is off to a tremendous start, reminiscent of his strong rookie season, but even better. Notice this quote from a recent Baseball Prospectus, link to original http://premium.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2002

Alex Gonzalez is even more of a surprise. He had regressed considerably since his fine rookie season in 1999, and he missed most of last season with a separated shoulder. This season he hitting .332/.375/.594, and is on pace for 23 home runs and 106 RBI. His production is straight out of Derek Jeter's peak, while Jeter is hitting like the old Alex Gonzalez.

Actually, he only had a good first half in 1999. Ever since he was the Marlins representative in the 1999 All-Star game, he was horrible. I think he was in real danger of losing his job to Andy Fox this year. He must of had some real attitude adjustment.

Whether this is real remains to be seen. I think the Marlins' A.G. has a larger upside; the Cubs version is what he is; a consistent middle-pack player. The younger Gonzalez has a CHANCE to be a BIG STAR despite floundering for a while.

Perry Hill might have had something to do with it. Then again, it could have been those loud rumors that Fish pitchers actively voiced their preference for having Fox in the lineup last year.

A. Gonz., Marlins version, has cooled off to a seasonal 259/311/451. But that's still better than he's been.
