Well, I got my order in for Lee's Encyclopedia tonight! I was pretty excited about it but then I went to Baseball Immortals and started looking through some of the player stats and I realized this thing is incredible. I'm not sure whether Lee is a genius or completely mad: My only fear is that someone will commit him before my copy gets sent!

Steve and Lee: What is the scoop on you guys? You seem to be doing a very similar thing in running an Online Hall of Fame. You seem to be friendly and cooperative and to have lots of goodwill toward one another. Don't you know that jealousy, backbiting, and hard feelings are expected from both of you. You need to get with the program guys!!

Who created this discussion forum?? It is absolutely amazing. I've never seen one where all the threads are available to be read at once. How totally convenient! And to see how many views each post gets is so nice.

I actually prefer the format to Steve's NetShrine a little better than Lee's current setup at baseballimmortals.net. Could I suggest to you, Lee, to arrange your players by the method suggested by Bill James of Definition A, B, C, and D Hall of Famers. Placing Albert Belle alongside Babe Ruth doesn't make any more sense than letting Lloyd Waner in. OK, Steve let him in but not as an equal to the truly great.

Anyway, BOTH of you are in my hall of fame!!

Tim

Lee is incredible. He's on my personal wish list - in terms of getting his due. Some day, I hope he gets a break and gets a job something like Rob Neyer's (at the least) - he deserves it.

Our stuff is the same - yet different. Neither of us knew the other's product when we started. I'm not even sure how I got started - just fooling about trying to make a baseball website (then back on AOL). Basically, it was a fun thing that kinda got out of control. Lee's site is more of a "what the HOF should be if they did it right." My site aims to more create that feeling you have when you find an old box of baseball cards - and see a player that you forgot about (or hadn't thought about in a while) and then say something like "Wow! Rob Wilfong! I totally forgot about him!" Obviously, Rob Wilfong has to pay to get in and see the Immortals at Lee's site. Plus, it's not like we're ESPN and CNNSI, each fighting over the same dollar. NetShrine is non-profit. Both Lee and I do our site out of love of the game - more so than trying to be rich.

It's a software product from a company called vBulletin. You can learn more about them at www.vbulletin.com - - agreed, the software is very user friendly.

IMHO, one can "learn" a lot more at Lee's site. NetShrine's aim is to be of a hangout where we celebrate baseball. As far as format, I think it's always changing for both of us. You should have seen this place in the old days of the frames set up. Gosh, what was I thinking. :loud:

Thanks - means a lot to me - as I am sure it does to Lee also.

Lee - please, add on if I missed anything here or got something confused.

Just checked by to see if there had been any response to my last post and noticed it had vanished. Just found it here in another part of the Forum.

Now I know why you REALLY go by Skipper Steve; it's because you run such a tight ship!

One thing that I can't seem to find is a way of reading all the last posts. I have to search around a bit. Am I missing the obvious again??

Thanks for filling me in a bit on the development of your site.

Can't I be both? :naughty:

I did consider different levels, but I decided that if I tried that, I would driving myself crazy on too many of the tough borderline calls between each level.

Here's how I got started.

In the summer of 1996, I came up with the idea that I should build a baseball website. I just had a couple of big problems. First, I had no idea what I should put on it. More importantly, that summer, I was busy studying for the bar exam. So, I knew whatever I thought of had to wait.

Then, the Yankees won the World Series. I realized I had my topic--the World Championship season. I went through ESPN.com's archives and wrote a day by day review of the Yankees season and then added some pages on Yankees history.

Then, I decided I wanted another website, which covered all of the majors. I came up with some topics and, for each topic, I had a page for each team. That website was called Baseball City.

Then, I realized that 1997 would be my 20th year following baseball, so I decided I should come up with my own Hall of Fame, honoring players who've played during that time.

The next day, I came up with a new idea. I'm a baseball historian. I've spent more time studying baseball history than anything I've done. So, why limit myself to that 20 year period.

So, I created the Baseball City Hall of Fame. I came up with the membership list, after writing short capsule summaries of close to 1000 players. I then created a template for player areas and started to create those areas, as well as statistical chart areas.

A little while later, I changed the name to Baseball Immortals.

NetShrine is non-profit. Both Lee and I do our site out of love of the game - more so than trying to be rich.

Baseball Immortals is also non profit. I have recently realized that it serves a good advertisement for the encyclopedia and have put a little ad for the encyclopedia on the bottom of each page.

I concur.

Lee - please, add on if I missed anything here or got something confused.

I haven't really touched on the differences and respective strengths of our sites since you did a good job on it and I can't think of anything to add.
