Given my previously aired misgivings about the CGI Spider-Man in the movie of the same name, I have to worry about the use of a CGI Hulk for all the Hulk scenes in the soon-to-be-released movie. Computer technology has come a long way, but not enough for a computer-generated character to look "right" against real-life people in a movie. The preview scenes have looked a bit "off" to me, and those should supposedly be the best scenes.

Hulk, at its best, is an interesting study of the emotions often bottled up inside a man, a sort of modern Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. Done wrong, it's just going to look goofy.

I feel much the same way. When I saw the previews, I thought the Hulk looked really cheesy. I'm not sure if I'm going to even bother going.

It will be a disgrace to the memory of Bill Bixby (now if I can just find copies of "The Magician" somewhere....)

It seems odd to me that Ang Lee did all the body movements they used for the Hulk. I guess he followed that old adage about doing it yourself if you want it done right.

I'm going to see the film, but I'm not looking forward to that cartoonish cad from the commercials.

Not planning on seeing it. Just not impressed by the previews..

Heck, I have yet to see the new X-Men movie. I would rather see that than The Hulk.

Ditto.
I'm going to wait - - Entertainment! had a cover for the Hulk that read: Big Movie. Big Budget. Big Gamble.

I think they are right. Unless there's more than you see on the previews, this has a chance to bomb.

The way they are pushing the marketing tie-ins so hard before the release is a bad sign too, I think.

Another review, not so good - - http://www.tcpalm.com/tcp/movies/article/0,1651,TCP_1162_2052619,00.html

45 minutes into it until the first hulk out? That's stupid.

Local paper here also ragged it. 1.5 stars out of 4. Too long. Too brooding without anything else to flesh it out. No plot line - more just a character study. Didn't really say much about the CGI, but implied that it was inappropriate or awkward.

"Wreckin' the town with the power of a bull
Angel, monster, clown, who is as loveable."

I absolutely do not get the interest in this movie. From the promos, the CGI hulk looks completely absurd, like a video game monster plunked down in the middle of a live action movie. I can't believe it's an Ang Lee movie! I'm not sure I get the appeal of "Hulk" at all, even relative to other comic book heroes. If anyone around here enjoys it, that's great - but it's definitely not for me.

Perusing the reviews available on-line, some are quite laudatory, others downbeat. The general opinion seems to be pretty good, actually, with the Times review being the worst of the lot.

Satch, the appeal of the Hulk has always been tied up in the wish-fulfillment of the male adolescent: to be able to become large and powerful enough to overcome any bully, in fact anything at all. The greatest appeal of the series has always been to the 12-year-old boy----"Hulk is strongest one of all!"

The tomato-rating on Rotten Tomatoes is positive, for now. But JUST so.

Fair enough. It's too bad you have to also become green, though. :)

FWIW, I watched this tonight - - it wasn't terrible. Kinda interesting. The film editing and cinematography was different. I'm actually glad that I watched it. Oscar stuff? No. Four out of four stars? No. But, on a 1 to 4 scale, with the 4 being tops, I would give it a 2.79.

I've seen many, many, other movies that people have liked that were worse than the Hulk movie.

You know, I watched it again last night - - the film editing and scene transitions are really cutting edge. It's a shame this movie does not get more credit. I really liked it.

I saw this a few weeks ago but didnt think to post. I thought it was pretty darn bad. The actor playing Banner just didn't work for me at all and the story was just plain dull. It wasn't the FX that killed it for me, it was just plain bad acting/writing/staging. I didn't expect great things, but as much as T3 was a pleasant surprise (by being semi-good when I expected decent was the maximum upside), this was a disappointment and i didn't expect much to start with.

There's already talk on HULK 2 - you'll probably want to "skip" it, skip.

I'm with Skip - I thought it was the worst summer movie I saw. It made 2 Fast 2 Furious look brilliant in comparison, with the races as high art.

I thought Eric Bana was great in Black Hawk Down, but I didn't like him as Bruce Banner. Jennifer Connelly had all the energy of a brick, and those mutant dogs almost made me laugh out loud in the theater.

Maybe I just liked it because I went in with zero expectations and actually was anticipating seeing the worst movie ever?

Could be - I've liked a few movies that have been universally panned (Dreamcatcher). I think expectations have a lot to do with how much you enjoy a film.

Finally saw this on video. MY opinion is kind of mixed. I thought the way the movie was layed out was interesting. The comic book style filiming with the split screen and the story leading to the next frame was very well done.

The special effects were mediocre. I doubt people would have bought a Lou Ferrigno type Hulk in a blockbuster type movie. But the special effects were not that great.

The story was ok, the acting uninspired. I thought Eric Bana did an OK job, Jennifer Connely seemed underused and miscast, Nick Nolte and Sam Sheppard severly overacted.

My take and yours are dead on.
But, later, when I watched the extras on the DVD, I had a better appreciation for the FX work. They put a lot behind it that you don't realize.

Guess that could be said for most FX work..........

...I thought that Bana[who was so so good in Black hawk Down] did well with little, ditto Sam Elliot and Connelly..the fx were good,i thought...defintely[for me] a dvd movie, but still better then I would have thought...

Always get Sam Sheppard and Sam Elliot confused!

There were a few critics including Roger Ebert who liked it. This movie could have been better but it also could have been a lot worse.
