ESPN's Around the Horn, along with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are reporting that as soon as Randy Johnson comes off the DL and is shown to be healthy, he is going to be traded to the Atlanta Braves for Javy Lopez, Jason Marquis and prospect Wilson Betimit....
this to me is VERY, VERY interesting if its true...
what do yall think??

Doesn't seem like enough for the Unit, IMHO. Even if he can pitch only 2 more years or so, he could be the guy to "fix" the Braves' staff.

Well, if Arizona is serious about cutting salary, that's one way to do it. I like the idea of getting a good prospect and a guy like Marquis, although I don't know how much mileage I'd expect from Lopez. I'd probably try and dump him soon after getting him, or let him leave on his own.
For the Braves, it would give them a pretty great 1-2 combo for the playoffs, and it would provide some stability in a rotation that's been inconsistent. My biggest concern would be giving away too much in an attempt to improve an already-good team, but it doesn't seem like Arizona's asking for too much. But it would certainly show that they're serious about the here and now, since the benefits will be short-term. Hard to resist a shot at a guy like Unit, especially when you're not giving up someone like AJ or CJ.
This is an interesting deal.

I would think the D-Backs could do better if they shopped RJ around. The trade of RJ to a contender would instantly make them one of the favorites to win the whole thing.

the D-backs should be able to do better than that....is betimit still a prospect?

Excuse me - but, the Braves had to give away Millwood because money was tight; but, now they can pick up the tab on Unit?
Sounds strange.

Well, perhaps the Braves thought people would have bought their Millwood story- and since NO ONE did they decided the heck with it.

Not only don't I believe that the trade would happen, I'm sorry to tell you this, but I can't believe that (1) ESPN's around the horn is even reporting anything, let alone a trade and (2) the AJC is reporting it.
First, let's look at the evidence regarding ESPN's around the horn. Those columns are nothing more than a collection of all of the game notes from the bottom of each individual game's AP report. Most of the time, ESPN hasn't even bothered to update ATH in any way other than change the date at the top. In other words, they've changed the date, but still had the game notes from a few days before.
So, if something went into around the horn, it would have come word for word from AP and if it came from AP, it would have had superexposure. You can find AP's stuff on virtually every single website that has sports news.
Another piece of evidence removing the idea that ESPN's around the horn is reporting something is that was one of the things I normally collect each day (the days when it's updated, it's worthwhile) and they haven't had a single one since May 27.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution is one of the papers that I collect all of the online articles from while collecting material for the ATM reports. In the past 2 weeks, here is the only time Betemit's names been mentioned (and not just from the AJC, from any online newspaper that is among the dozens collected at ESPN's site lites), from May 25--"Richmond reached .500 with a 13-7 win at Buffalo on Thursday, despite not getting major contributions from Jason Marquis or Wilson Betemit."

A) Johnson is the single biggest debtor of the Diamondbacks franchise. To trade him, they would have to either make good on about forty million in deferred money or transfer that to Atlanta. With the Braves for sale, won't happen.
B) Braves can't take on payroll. Period.
C) No trade clause in Unit's deal. Sure, he could waive it, but it would cost somebody seriously. Like Matt Williams this off-season, Johnson has kids in the Phx area.
