Someone on an Oriole board showed me this. Are they just making stuff up there?

Whatever they're smoking at the Post must be some good s**t.

I see one real problem with the article:

The Mets live with a Jay Bell/Melvin Mora platoon until Jose Reyes is ready later this summer.

Mora and Bell both hit right-handed.

Back to the real world, I doubt the Orioles would go for that Piazza trade. Syd Thrift might have made it, but not the current braintrust. The Royals trade is a possibility, and would give the Mets first shot to negotiate with Beltran, a good thing for them.

The Dodgers probably would not make the trade for Alomar, but I could be wrong. I seriously doubt the Cardinals trade Drew to get Benitez.

Mostly, it's that fan fantasy, that you could come in, take the GM seat, make a few quick deals, and make your team a contender. Nothing more. No substance.

So that's where the Mets get their stash!

When was the last time that a writer pitched a trade idea in a column and the club actually made the deal?

This column is not worth the paper it's printed on, IMHO.

This column seems much more sensible:

Number 5 would be impossible.

But if the Mets want to be good it may be the only way. If they're pressured into moves because of the Yanks they kill themselves. The Mets should be competing with Philly, Atlanta, Montreal/San Juan/Washington/Portland/wherever and Florida.

The Mets could use Beltran as he is a proficient catcher of flyball, but he won't come cheap. He's Already making $6M a year and goes free agent at the end of 2004. The Royals will not give him up without serious compensation this year.

Number 5 would be impossible. Actually, that's when the Mets are at their best, and the Yankees at their worst. A good Mets team often makes for a poorer Yankees team, because George S. tries to overcompensate to recapture the Back Pages.

That the Mets drop $40 M off the payroll after this season is the good news. If they can use it to grab up Beltran and/or Vlad, even better. I disagree with Rosenthal, they don't need to jettison Alomar and Benitez now, when their value is low. They need to build up the real problem areas. A good GM could accomplish this within two years, given the Mets' budget. I don't know that Phillips is that guy.

Sherman has always been a bit screwy...I guess he has to fill some space every day but it's a stupid article...

I do keep hearing those rumors of Benitez going to the Cardinals and I really hope Izzy comes back soon so it stops...one of the reasons I love watching the Cardinals is seeing their comraderie (sp?) and how they pull for each other and really gel...yes, chemistry can be overrated but this team has good chemistry and throwing Benitez in the mix could be disastrous -- I can't see him demanding the locker next to him be empty there and having Vina, Edmonds or Kline move the way Glavine did last week..not to mention having Tino and Benitez on the same team would be a no-no...ugh..

It has been reported in St. Louis that several years ago, the Cards were ready to send Drew and Veres to the Mets for Benitez and Jay Payton. However, at the last minute, Drew got hot and Jocketty backed out.

While the Cards braintrust must like Benitez, they won't take on his $8M salary. If they were to do that, however, it would clearly signal to me that Izzy isn't coming back this season.
