Frequent Successful Contact v. Frequent Walks

A recent article by Stephen C. Smith of "FutureAngels.com" entitled "Contactball" got me wondering about teams who walk frequently versus teams who make frequent contact while hitting safely often.  So, I started playing around with some batting stats - from 1994 through 2004 (the current "Long Ball Era" in major league baseball).

The first thing that I came up with was a measure of "frequent contact while hitting safely often" called Frequent Successful Contact (FSC).  It is team batting average times the percentage of plate appearances for a team in which they did not walk or strikeout.  

Then, I ranked every season by every big league team since 1994, by FSC, and included the team's runs created per game (RC/G) for that season, as compared to the league average - and added a "seasonal" RC/G versus the league average for each team/season (by taking the RC/G against the league average and multiplying it by 162).  Here are the results:

The above table tells us that teams with a FSC of "2" or greater, since 1994, on average created 23 runs above league average, in theory, over a 162 game season - and teams with a FSC below "2" on average created 68 runs less than league average, in theory, over a 162 game season.  Based on this, it is safe to say that "frequent contact while hitting safely often" (in most cases) is a good thing whereas not doing it (again, in most cases) is bad.

Next, it was time to look at teams who walk frequently (FBB).  And, to that end, I used walks per plate appearance - and, again, included the team's runs created per game (RC/G) for that season, as compared to the league average - and added a "seasonal" RC/G versus the league average for each team/season (by taking the RC/G against the league average and multiplying it by 162).  Here are the results:

The above table tells us that teams who walked at a rate of .09 or greater of their plate appearances, since 1994, on average created 13 runs above league average, in theory, over a 162 game season - and teams who walked at a rate under .09 of their plate appearances on average created 56 runs less than league average, in theory, over a 162 game season.  Based on this, it is safe to say that "frequent walking" (in most cases) is a good thing whereas not doing it (again, in most cases) is bad.

Now, let us compare the under/over for frequent walks (FBB) and FSC, in terms of average runs created above league average, in theory, over a 162 game season:

It does seem that teams, on average, over the last 11 seasons, who were good at frequent contact while hitting safely often faired better offensively than teams, on average, in the same time span who were good at drawing walks.  Last time I checked, 23 is higher than 13.

What about those teams who were great, not just good, at FBB and FSC?  How do they perform?  To the end, I looked at the "Top 20" team/seasons in both FBB and FSC since 1994 - and the average runs created above league average, in theory, over a 162 game season.

For FSC, the average was 86 and for FBB the average was 41.  This compare was an even more convincing feather in the cap of frequent contact while hitting safely often as opposed to going for the walking often approach.

Lastly, what about World Series Champions?  Looking at the last seven teams to win a ring, I can tell you that they all had a FSC of 2+ - sans the 2001 Diamondbacks who were very close at 1.98.  And, I can tell you that 5 of the 7 had a FBB of .09 or greater of their plate appearances.  Therefore, perhaps, if you want to be a World Champion, you had better walk often and also make frequent contact while hitting safely often!

POSTSCRIPT - NOVEMBER 18, 2004:  

There's an old line from an Arnold movie that goes "You should not drink and bake!"  Well, maybe there should be a line that goes "You should not get up at 5 am, work for 9 hours, spend 3 hours commuting, play with a 7-month old and a 29-month old for two hours, and then amuse yourself with baseball statistics at 11 pm in the evening!"  When I woke up this morning, I realized that I did not consider the "double dip" factor while goofing around with this stuff - meaning that I did not take into account that some teams in my previous list sorts were good at both FSC and FBB (like the World Champions that I stated).  So, just now, I did some more noodling.

I decided to look at teams who were good (2+) at FSC while also being bad at FBB (under .09) - as well as teams who were bad (<2) in FSC while also being good (.09+) at FBB.  The results are below.  (Note:  FSC and FBB are rounded in the charts - but, for the sorts and cuts, they are pure numbers.)
