It was once said that every boy builds a shrine to some baseball hero, and before that shrine, a candle always burns.
Welcome to this virtual celebration of baseball where many candles glow in honor of big league heroes.

Subj:    News From NetShrine - 1/30/99
Date:    1/30/99 7:30:16 PM Eastern Standard Time
From:    NetShrine@aol.com

The majority of NetShrine's first month has been spent on promotion. However, there also have been a few slight modifications to NetShrine's structure during this time. Upon your next visit, please let us know what you think of the changes in our menu and additions to our links. Oh yeah, please don't forget to visit our sponsors - that's why they're with us.

Since NetShrine's recent focus has been on spreading the good word and tweaking the site, there have not been all that many inductions into NetShrine in the last 4 weeks. Since our last update, the following have been added to NetShrine's Gallery:

Joe Adcock
Tommy Holmes
Cliff Johnson
Dale Long
Bill Madlock
Firpo Marberry
Marty Marion
Al Rosen
Fleet Walker

NetShrine has several candidates presently in the hopper that are under review. Expect more to grace the NetShrine Gallery soon.

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. Regards,

Expect more players to be added soon. We have many currently under consideration.

In addition to spending time reviewing the latest group of NetShrine inductees, we've been busy instituting a few minor changes (all cosmetic) to the site - mostly to the appearance of our "front door." We hope you like the new look.

NetShrine would like to thank SABR member Cliff Blau (www.erols.com/brak) for some of his recent feedback on Amos Rusie, Tony Mullane and Fleet Walker. Information is the name of the game at NetShrine - and we always appreciate a helping hand.

NetShrine has also added some new sponsors. Please stop by our Sponsors Page for links to their sites. We know that you'll enjoy what they have to offer - same as those sponsors already on board.

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. Regards,

Subj:    News From NetShrine - 3/7/99
Date:    3/7/99 11:51:36 PM Eastern Standard Time
From:    NetShrine@aol.com

It's been an interesting three weeks since we've last been in touch. There's much to pass along to you.

We have been very busy at NetShrine. We've given away our first "Wamby." (What's a "Wamby"? You have to go to NetShrine to find out!) We've also added several new links to our "Recommended Sites." Additionally, a few more NetShrine Sponsors have signed on. (As always, please visit our sponsors!) Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, we've added a new "image" under "Link to Us." (So, if you happen to have an image link to NetShrine on your page - you may want to check out this additional option.)

"What about additions to the NetShrine Gallery?" you're probably asking yourself. Well, we do have a slew of candidates - which have come up from our own research as well as those recommended by NetShrine visitors. But, no one has been added since our last group. Why? We're getting to that.............

The biggest news out of the NetShrine camp is the difficulty that we've been having with our host (AOL) these past few weeks. There have been problems on both ends - yours and ours. With the AOL server misbehaving, many have reported difficulty with accessing or using NetShrine. On our side, many times we're unable to dial into AOL - or, even if we're lucky enough to get in, some snafu at AOL will not allow us to upload files. Lastly, assuming none of the aforementioned problems occur, the (more often than not) sluggish temperament of AOL's server turns your surfing experience into an unpleasant one - no matter if you're an administrator or user of NetShrine.

It's finally reached the point beyond tolerance. Therefore, NetShrine has decided to find a new host. (And, we promise, every effort will be made to refrain from singing "We're a movin' on up..." while we do it.)

What does this mean? Basically, that - for a while - WYSIWYG lives - what you see is what you get. Unfortunately, rather than spending time on what we like to do (researching ballplayers), NetShrine will be busy making the move to a new host. (Once we have the new home secured, of course, we'll pass that news along to you.)

In the interim, NetShrine - where it sits now - will still be "up and running" (assuming that AOL will comply). You can always visit NetShrine - and enjoy what's there. You can continue to e-mail the curator with recommendations, etc. The only ruffle is that additions (or modifications or improvements) to the site will have to wait until we're hunkered down in our new home. (And, hopefully, that will not take too long.)

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine - as well as for your patience during this transitional period. I know that once we're easier to reach on a regular basis, you'll be able to enjoy the NetShrine experience even more. Regards,

Steve Lombardi

Subj:    News From NetShrine - 3/20/99
Date:    3/20/99 3:53:12 PM Eastern Standard Time
From:    curator@netshrine.com

It took two weeks, but, it's done.

NetShrine now has a new "home." And, the address is www.netshrine.com - - which is much easier to remember than our last URL.

(If you're new to our mailing list, and are wondering "what's this all about?" - then you should visit the NetShrine Broadcast Archives at our Website and see our last message sent on March 7th.)

Please make a note of our new URL. If, by chance, you happen to use the old URL by mistake, fear not - it will still get you to NetShrine - but, it will add an extra step to your journey.

NetShrine would thank John Skilton (www.skiltech.com) and Marc Stafford (www.net-surfin.com) for their help with converting some our features to our new host. (We have added a few new and different wrinkles to the NetShrine layout - upon your next visit, please let us know what you think about them.)

As we've been concentrating on the site conversion, there have been no additions to the NetShrine Gallery. (Although, we did add a sponsor and some links. As always, please be sure to check them out.)

Within the next month, there will be several additions to the Gallery. The candidates (both found and suggested) have been piling up. As rotisserie season is about to begin again, I would imagine that we'll get to the updates some time after Opening Day. (For those who are not aware, "Opening Day" is a hectic time of the year for me - I run one fantasy league, participate in another, and co-author a rotisserie column for www.express-stats.com - always busy, I have even less disposal time between mid-March and mid-April.)

Once again, please remember to check out our new digs! With the move complete, it is good to back in the business of concentrating solely on researching and sharing information - which is NetShrine's goal.

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. Regards,

Subj:    News From NetShrine - 7/16/99
Date:    7/16/99 12:08:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From:    curator@netshrine.com

There have been recent additions to the Ruminations, Recommended Sites, and Mailbag features at NetShrine. Please be sure to check them out upon your next visit.

An item we always meant to address..........for the "in case you were wondering department," when NetShrine was first launched six months ago, shortly thereafter, we received an e-mail from a visitor who made note that the "bios" found on the site were somewhat "spartan."

There's no arguing this point. It's a fact, jack - and, it's intentional. (This is especially true of those in the "Immortals" Wing. But, who would have thought that "Immortals" required much explanation?) Anyway............

Someday soon, we expect NetShrine to be "fully loaded." At which point, all those warranting enshrinement will be "in the house." (From there, it will only be a matter of adding individuals once they retire - of course, assuming they deserve entry to NetShrine.) Back to the point, once NetShrine reaches that magical junction, it is our every intention to then expand upon the descriptions of each "NetShrinee." So, stay tuned.

In the interim, it's anticipated that you'll still be able to enjoy what's out there. Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. We hope you'll visit the site again soon. Regards,

Just a quick update as to what's going on at NetShrine..........

For the past two weeks, we've been dealing with some "hardware" issues at NetShrine HQ. (Now we know why they call it a "mother" board!) In any event, things have settled down a bit - enough to facilitate several small necessary updates to NetShrine.

Upon your next visit to NetShrine, please be sure to stop by the "NetShrine Mailbag," "Wamby Winners" and "Sponsors Page" - as each of these features have been updated since the last NetShrine release.

In addition, when you next visit NetShrine, please take some time to review the "Rate This Site" option. Any feedback which you can provide via the avenues available is deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance for your attention to this item.

What about the Gallery? Yes, additions are coming. Hopefully within the next 10 days or so. Once done, there will be a release. Ditto for "Ruminations."

Lastly, NetShrine recently received a note from Christine Roane - the Site Promotion Specialist for The Christian Science Monitor Website. The Monitor page is now offering a multimedia interactive tour of Fenway Park. As Ms. Roane states: "Take a seat in the bleachers, the grandstand, or behind home plate. Listen to vendors and fans discuss their favorite memories." If you're interested in checking this out, it can be found at http://www.csmonitor.com/atcsmonitor/specials/fenway/index.html

From:    curator@netshrine.com

Almost three weeks ago, there was a mention that additions to the NetShrine Gallery and Ruminations were only days away. They never happened. In fact, they're still in the conceptual stage. When will they be a reality? Now, most likely by month-end September. Finding time - always an issue - has been an increasing problem. Additionally, updates to the Mailbag, etc., are overdue. Of course, whenever the updates do occur, we'll let you know.

So, why the note? While it's not BIG news, there has been a small tweak to the NetShrine look. Nothing major, mind you. Just an attempt to continue raising the bar. Please let us know what you think. At NetShrine, we believe in setting the trend - or, at the worst, being just slightly ahead of what's in vogue - rather than strictly duplicating a previously used look.

Therefore, this slight change aside, NetShrine will under go yet another metamorphosis in the future. There are some ideas in the hopper right now! Stay tuned.

It has been a month since our last contact as there's not much new to report on the NetShrine front. Other personal pursuits have required more attention as of late - as such, NetShrine is fairly the same as it was when we last wrote. However.............

.........we have added some links, sponsors, and awarded a Wamby. (More links will come soon.) Please look for these few additions upon your next visit to NetShrine.

Also, we've added an alphabetical listing of the 546 current NetShrine Gallery members. It's anticipated that this addition will be of much assistance as you look for someone in the Gallery. You can access the list via the "Search" option located at the lower left of our page. Check it out - we think you'll like it.

Nothing new to report in regard to additions to The Gallery. We do hope to add many soon - once done, we'll pass along the good word. Also coming within the next quarter: additions to "Ruminations" and our "Trusted Media" sections.

In the interim, we have made additions to our "Recommended Sites." Please give them a look upon your next visit to NetShrine - it's anticipated that you'll enjoy them. We've also updated the "NetShrine Mailbag" recently.

Subj:    News From NetShrine - 4/11/00
Date:    4/11/00 8:54:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From:   curator@netshrine.com

It has been two months since the last NetShrine newsletter. What have we been up to? Some, but not much. Those who are on this mailing list for more than a year, and who have good memories, may recall that this time of the year contains many other commitments. Therefore, the first quarter of the year is a slow time for NetShrine.

We've had some additions to "Ruminations." If you haven't been there in a while, you may want to check them out. It's anticipated that you'll enjoy them.

And, of course, we have the new "Discussion Forum" which was added last February. Participation has been slow. However, if you have something "baseball" on your mind that you want to share with the world, please feel free to make a post. It's your forum.

We do expect to update the "Gallery" soon - probably within the next month or so. Our last update was at the end on 1999; and, we realize that we're overdue. Thanks for your patience with that.

Today, NetShrine received hit # 10,000 since going live in January 1999. While many websites consider such an achievement modest, and others (like ESPN.com) may get 10,000 hits in an hour, NetShrine is very proud of this milestone. For a non-commercial, basically opinionative and yet still hopefully referential platform, twenty odd hits a day is just dandy. The number of hits is secondary - the fact that they keep coming is more imperative.

Related, we'd like to thank you for your interest in NetShrine and for your part in making this mark possible. We hope you'll visit the site again soon and recommend it to anyone you know who may be a baseball fan. Regards,

Steve Lombardi

Bobball, Inc. has provided a free online interactive historical baseball statistics database (1871-1999 statistics) for NetShrine to distribute. It's an incredible tool and highly recommended. Other than Windows 95, 98 or NT (3.5, 4.0) and an active internet connection, there are no other requirements to run the database. It's simple - download the file, and open it while on-line. Go to www.netshrine.com and choose "Free Stat Database" from our menu for more.

We've also had fairly recent updates to our Recommended Sites, Mailbag, Wamby Winners, Trusted Media, Trophy Cabinet, and Ruminations features. Check them out when you can - we hope you find it enjoyable.

"Lords of the Realm: The Real History of Baseball" - - by John Helyar
"Dollar Sign on the Muscle: The World of Baseball Scouting" - - by Kevin Kerrane
"Cobb: A Biography" - - by Al Stump

Perhaps three of the best baseball books ever written. And, NetShrine wants to add the paperback versions of these THREE BASEBALL MASTERPIECES to the library of someone - perhaps you!

What's the catch? Well, it's not as tough as Joe Rudi's 9th inning, leaping, backhanded, grab of Denis Menke's shot to the fence in Game 2 of the 1972 Series - that's for sure. In fact, the catch is very small, indeed.

Starting immediately, and ending at the close of 12/1/00, NetShrine will be running a contest to determine who will receive the three aforementioned books.

How can you win? From now, through December 1st (2000), whomever is judged by NetShrine as being the "Most Valuable Contributor" to the NetShrine Discussion Forum will win. There's no magic formula which will be used to choose the "Most Valuable Contributor." It will be a subjective determination - based on a combination of "quality and quantity" (as judged by NetShrine) of the contributions made to our Forum. Volume alone won't do it for you - nor will just a handful of intelligent posts. Frequency and substance are both necessary - in concert. On 12/2/00, there will be an announcement as to whom was chosen "Most Valuable Contributor" and that individual will receive the paperbacks.

Are you interested? Then, go to www.netshrine.com, choose "Bleachers" and select "Discussion Forum" - and start contributing! (If you know of someone else who may be interested, please pass this note to them as well.) Good luck!

NetShrine has built it, now we hope you'll come...............

Fourteen months ago NetShrine first introduced their Baseball Discussion Forum.  Originally provided by Boardhost, our forum was later switched (8 1/2 months ago) to CoolBoard hosting.  However, using boards under a host provider always had its limitations - - connectivity, reliability, annoying advertisements, etc.

Therefore, NetShrine has made the plunge in order to bring its visitors a state of the art forum - - with all the peripheral goods that one would expect from a first class discussion forum.  (Special thanks to the good folks at skiltech.com, our server host, for all their help with this forum.  If you ever want to get set up on the 'Net, you owe it to yourself to use Skiltech - they are the best.)

Rather than to run the risk of straining your eyes by providing a list of all the wonder of this new forum, we'll simply ask that you take 10 minutes to check it out for yourself.  While there, please take the time to register for the forum.  Registration is fast, no strings attached, simple, extremely painless, and only required once.

Once you're registered, you'll be able to participate in the forum at will.  Try it for a few weeks - - if baseball is your passion, you should enjoy the banter therein.  It's anticipated that the NetShrine Discussion Forum can be one of those sites which you can bookmark and visit daily - - as there promises to be something new and entertaining every day.  (Note the new name of the forum - - as it now has a few sections for non-baseball discussions, in case that's your thing as well.)

Part of the success of any forum is the number of participants which use it - - so, why not be part of that magic here?  Go to www.netshrine.com and select "Discussion Forum."

Thanks for your time now and, as always, thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. We hope you will visit the site (and the forum!) soon.   Please be sure to pass this note to all your friends whom may have an interest in the forum.  Regards,

Steve Lombardi

The NetShrine Gallery was launched three years and two months ago.  The format of the Gallery remained unchanged in all that time - until now.

Effective today, the NetShrine Gallery will no longer will contain wings for Immortals, The Grinders, Under Appreciated, Icons of an Era, Significant Achievers, and Peripherals.  From this date forward, the NetShrine Gallery will solely house wings for Apicals, Supernals, Icons, and Contributors (by the era which applies).

After long and careful consideration, the decision was that NetShrine is better under this new format.

It's best to visit the Gallery at
http://www.netshrine.com/gallery.html
to understand how this redesign comes into play.

In case you're wondering, the new "distribution" of NetShrine inductees can be found in the close of this notice.

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine. We hope you will visit the site again soon. Regards,

Steve Lombardi

Subj: News From NetShrine - 8/4/02

Yes, it's been a while.  Over 4 months, in fact, since the last "News From NetShrine."  Many reasons - most notably a hardware issue at NetShrine HQ that lasted over 10 weeks.  Nonetheless, we're back now, with some news to share.

A new feature has just been added to the "Ruminations" section of NetShrine, entitled "Not Just A .500 Pitcher."  We think you'll enjoy it and it can be found at:

http://www.netshrine.com/ruminations.html

In addition, there's been a truckload of new merchandise added to the "NetShrine Store."  We think the new black hat is going to be a popular item.  To visit the store, go to:

http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=netshrine

Lastly, if you do one thing, go to NetShrine.com and click on the "Hey Bud!" sign - - - and consider enhancing your wardrobe (while making a statement!).

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine.  We hope you'll visit the site again soon.  Regards,

Yes, it's been a while.  Over 3 months, exactly, in fact, since the last "News From NetShrine."

Fear not that things are slow and that's the cause of the silence.  In actuality, many things have been in the hopper - including some cosmetic changes to the site and almost a dozen new "Guest" essays added to NetShrine.  Things have been quiet because we've been hard at work!

FYI, a new feature has just been added to the "Ruminations" section of NetShrine, entitled "Today's Big Deal But Back Then."  We think you'll enjoy it and it can be found at:

http://www.netshrine.com/ruminations.html

In addition, there's even more stuff coming down the pipe - including some new interviews and some new activities that can happen through the site.  More to come on all that, once it's in place.

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine.  We hope you'll visit the site again soon.  Regards,

Effective today, NetShrine.com has become an Amazon.com Associate.

What does this mean?

If you like NetShrine.com, and shop at Amazon.com, you can now use the latter as a way to help support the former.

How does it work?

Simple, if you are about to purchase something from Amazon - any product at all, books, DVDs, appliances, baby products, whatever - and are willing to purchase it via the NetShrine "portal" to Amazon, then NetShrine will receive a nominal referral fee from Amazon.com.

Where's the catch?

No catch.  Zero.  Nada.  Zilch.  Goose Eggs.  Zero.  None.  Zip.
This is EXACTLY the same as if you shopped directly from Amazon.com - - same prices, same discounts, anything and everything is the same.  There is no adverse impact to the purchaser, at all.  True.

Again, it's simple.  A way to help NetShrine.com without incurring any loss - since you get what you buy, at the normal cost (which is often discounted at Amazon.com anyway).  For fans of NetShrine, this is a win-win.

No pressure - just a heads-up to this new feature at NetShrine, in case you are interested.  The portal can be found at:

1.  http://www.netshrine.com/amazon.html
or
2.  At www.netshrine.com - in the section called KNOWLEDGE CORNER - under the link for "Books, DVDs, & More."

Thanks again for your interest in NetShrine.  We hope you'll visit the site again soon.  Regards,

About two weeks ago, we shared that the appearance of NetShrine.com had changed.  Since that time, a few more cosmetic tweaks were added.  Please stop by soon and check out our "new" look.

Also, we've just added a review of Mike Lupica's book "Wild Pitch" to the Ruminations section, it can be found at:

http://www.netshrine.com/lupica_wildpitch.html

Lastly, if you've never read Bruce Markusen's "Cooperstown Confidential" - you're missing some good stuff.  It can be found in many places on the web:  http://www.pubdim.net/baseballlibrary/ (under reader submissions), as well as www.sportsnetwork.com and www.historicbaseball.com. Well worth a peek or two!
